I was as skeptical as you are when I tried my first one after using a V1.

I don't use a radar detector around town there is just too much traffic to go any faster that traffic flows so GPS Features don't really help much. I do however pop the V1 on the windscreen when road tripping and it works fine for me. If you use a V1 very much you can tell the difference between the false alarms and the real thing fairly easily.

I've also found that the false alarms usually occur in areas where traffic is high and going fast is just not polite. With cell phones so prevalent it is just not prudent to go whizzing by slower drivers, you will be hunted down by a pursuit car with a description. It's all about being polite. On the highway people seem to travel in little groups. Go fast between the groups. When you approach a group, slow down and politely work up through the group without tailgating or cutting people off. It often takes a LOT of patience. The once clear of the group go fast to the next group. That includes a single car.

Was traveling in this manner and a Camaro was doing 110mph behind me. The Camaro was not going nearly as fast as I was in the open bits but was catching me about the middle of a group. He was not driving politely (kept going much faster than traffic) and drawing unwanted attention to use both going faster than traffic. When I realized this I put on some extra distance so he would not be catching me and went about my business of politely working through traffic then making time in the traffic gaps.

Well 30 or so miles later I see the headlights of a Camaro coming very unpolitely up behind through traffic. I thought "Oh carp, the guy caught up with me again." As I cleared the traffic and started to speed away I saw the Camaro horribly cut off the lead car and as he swerved in front of the car I noticed it was a black car with a white door, our State's High Speed Pursuit Camaro. He had pulled in the same lane to pace me and I was already doing 110. Figured I just got clocked I continued to the next group at 110. No lights yet so I slowed and did my politely thru traffic thing with the Patrol 10 car length behind. When I cleared the front car I figured he already had me at 110 so I did it again with him right behind again no lights. This continued for 50 miles going a little faster in each gap until we were doing 140 and still no dreaded flashing lights.

When I came to my exit it had gotten dark. I slowed and signaled. At this point he closed up the gap, pulled along side and flashed his lights. When I looked over he had turned on his dome lights and was giving me a thumbs up. He doused the lights and sped off as I exited.

I assume someone had called in describing the Porsche and the Camaro racing through traffic and the highway patrol sent out their pursuit car to find us because of the way this officer came up through traffic cutting people off and driving like a mad man. But instead of an aggressive driver he found a very polite driver just going real fast in the gaps where there weren't any other cars.

I have an older Escort Passport (8500) and it still works great. It has saved my bacon many times. Like others have said, never lead and pay close attention to all traffic up ahead -- look for tips from their brake lights, etc.
My challenge is that the sound (beep tone) is hard to hear with the windows down, sunroof open and ZZTop turned-up...

I've been using the Bel 995 for quite a while now and it's saved my a$$ on a number of occasions. It does beep a lot, but that just reminds me to pay attention to the speed limit.

If I didn't have that "reminder" beeping at me, I couldn't afford to drive.

I would like to get a new one and have been thinking about the Bel STi Driver or the Escort 9500ix. I really like the idea of a GPS detector.

The advantage of the Bel STi is that it is completely undetectable from radar detector detectors.

However, with all that being said, Speedtoys recommendations are the best and driving on I-95 every day, you'd better learn how to blend into traffic, especially if you drive an "arrest-me-red" Porsche!

If you let yourself stand out; tag - your it!

V1 here, but am thinking of upgrading to the 9500xi

Blinder M-27 Laser jammer. I have the older M-25 installed and it has more than paid for itself so far.

Good story, you got ***** to run 140 knowing there was a LEO behind you, I would have slowed way down.

Great story and very well put. I try to emulate this strategy when possible. Open it up when the road is open and slow her down when it plugs up. I also try to limit my time in the fast lane to the bare minimum and don't cut people off (most of the time).

Unfortunately, after I give the slow car a time or two to move over I can’t help but get more aggressive. Usually a downshift romp or a neutral rev will get their attention. Most of the time I’ve found if the car in front of you realizes that you want to get around them, they’ll pull over. When they do, I make sure to get around them quickly not to impede their speed if they were nice enough to yield the fast lane.

However, every once in a while some people just won’t give. Then I do the old slow lane hustle and blow by them, but I don’t do the cut back in their face move… I always give them as much room as I can before coming back over. The older I get the bigger that gap.

Oh yeah, I’ve been using a V-1 for probably over 10 years now. I know in its day, it was top dog and still works fine for me. Last speeding ticket was in 1989 doing 42 in a 35 in a VW Scirocco in college. I was just happy they guy didn’t ask me to blow. Maybe I should look to upgrade, but that will be down the list behind a few other much needed enhancements.

What works best for me is 10 o maybe 15 over or follow the fastest car at a distance... can't even begin to count how many times my bear bait has been canned.

Oh and tip for going fast in the gaps on the highway, another reason to slow down as you approach a group of cars. The drivers in the back cars in those packs are basically asleep. You approaching in their rear view mirror does not alert them to an oncoming car as much as it wakes them up just enough to realize they are plodding along at the back of the group. The typical reaction is to decide to go faster and they pull out into the fast lane just as you are about to pass. I can't count how many times this has happened, so watch for those back of the pack sleepers as you come up on the next group.

Stay in the right lane as much as possible and pass cars slowly. It is difficult to determine actual speed if you are by yourself, but when you go whizzing by a car it is obvious you are going way too fast.

And I just have to add that my 90 GT was the best car for driving like this I've ever had. And it wasn't the torque to just keep it in 5th even when accelerating in the gap. It had tremendous engine braking. Let off the gas at 140 or so and it would slow to 80 like you put on the brakes. Not only did the lack of brake lights NOT draw attention to me from behind, it was a lot more relaxing not having to move my right foot from the gas to the brake and back. My GTS does not engine brake nearly as much. hmmm, maybe a switch to disable the brake lights for high speed deceleration.

I have a Beltronics 995 and it works great - now if I can just get the brain-to-foot-to-brake-pedal connection working as good.

I think Beltronics offers great value for the performance.

Might as well count cows, or telephone poles. I just expect to pass the back marker after it has passed everyone else...

+1, the stroker's even better, when I first started driving the car I thought I had a dragging caliper or something.

Damn this thread, the hardwired connector for the V1 in the GTS isn't working, and now I'm looking at 9500xi's......

I come out of hiding for a brief few minutes and get a great story like that one! Made it worthwhile. I couldn't agree more. Cluster ***** are always a hazard and tempering your aggression around them will serve the interests of your bank account and safety both. And Mr. Lawman knows that too, as he spends much of his own time driving the same way working his way up through traffic that is already going too slowly.

Default Radar Roy - The Oracle of Radar Detection

Radar Roy is the person with the most definitive experience and database to back his valuations of radar/laser detectors as well as jammers.

An Escort 9500ci is in the future for both of my cars as is laser jammer front/rear. Both are legal here in the land of the sun.

40 pages of everything you wanted to know.... V1 fans will be disappointed.

Roy is a good guy, and he will answer any questions you have except a couple, do not ask him about the K40 or Craig Peterson if you expect any help for him.

Stand up **** in my book.

BTW, you will love the 9500Ci, good stuff.

Here is his forum.

Every thing you ever wanted to know about Radar detectors, these guys are more rabid than the 928 guys in some ways.
