Default what makes the euro model have more hp

I just picked up 2 928s 1 is a 81 us model the other is a 80 928 euro. The 80 is a basket case the 81 has a bad head gasket. I want to take the 2 and make 1 good car but I want to make sure I take the right parts out of the euro model before I sell the shell. Any help on this would be great.

Two kinds of Euro in 1980, one the same as the US 78/79, and a high performance S model with larger 4.7L motor, higher compression pistons, high flow heads with larger valves and hotter cam, larger ID intake system, and some differences in the fuel controls, WUR and maybe fuel distributor.

Good start is to check the motor ID, stamped into block and visible straight down from the top radiator hose. Should be M28/ 11 or 12 for Euro S.

***************

Good chance they both have bad or going bad head gaskets.

Not much swaps between the motors, Euro both regular and S are CIS a pressure controlled mechanical injection system, and US 81 is Ljet electronic injection. Pistons are different sizes. Beyond the motors most is the same or swapable, but the same parts go bad, rubber etc.

Its maybe 10 hp cat/no cat, and a no cat Euro that comes to the US gets a cat. If the area the car is in doesn't require an inspection, US or Federalized Euro can have the cat removed, zip difference in the non S models from cats.

There are pluses and minuses, but for the most part little power difference, with the practical difference CIS gets the worst mpg US or Euro.

In '80-86 MY engines have different parts.

'87+ MY are all same even though hp rating differs a little. Difference is caused German DIN vs USA SAE net hp scale difference. Non cat ROW cars do not have any more hp than cat versions.

Ah...."before I sell the shell..." good luck with that. More likely you will have to PAY someone to haul it away. IF the 1980 EURO IS AN S then it has bigger front brakes if they are the same as the USA 81 then it is not an S. Before you try swapping the euro engine into the USA car you need to KNOW that it runs other wise it might be much work for no gain. You are dealing with two very different fuel injection systems Euro is mechanical CIS, the USA car electronic injection. The HP comes from the Euro S having more displacement, higher compression, bigger valves, ported heads, bigger intake runners, bigger throttle body and less restriction by NOT having the USA air flow meter.
