James: it was a deliberate title! I then added the 'so when I look at my **** I'm happy' bit because its Friday.

I thought I would write something daft to lighten my qustion, and a cheap **** gag is always going to get attention on a 928 drivers' forum!

Viz is a very crude comic in the UK and the character 'Finbarr Saunders and his Double Entendres' was always snickering at sexual innuendo...

I'm curently in a lucky situation where my 928 is in rude health after a service and a good going over from RCA Porsche, so I can concentrate on the important things like making my **** more appealing. Perhaps an emoticon is needed here.

Ah, there it is!

I have an original insert but it has a painted/inked pattern. I just realized how sloppy it looks. Paint thinner will probably remove it if you're interested.

I would note that the stock insert is quite duff looking also - it was one of the least well executed interior items I think....

I have an aftermarket top I much prefer on my GTS - used to be available on ebay (as a "permanent" adhesive stick on...).

I had seen the caps on that website but prefer the 'before' not the 'after'!!

I have not seen an original **** insert in the flesh (!) but certainly prefer it in that photo.
Martin is kindly sending me his spare original cap , so when it arrives I can gasp in horror or delight depending on how they really look!

That is the one I have - in the flesh it is a huge improvement over stock (w/ a black shifter boot anyway).

I beg to differ.... At least the car was a 5 speed with a 5 speed graphic!

The worst piece on the 928 is the graphic of what looks like a 75' toyota corona on the hatch switch... Seriously, they were building a supercar and charging exhorbantly for it...Couldn't the image have been in the shape of a 928? I laugh to myself EVERY time I see it... And that means pretty much every time I get into or out of the car!

Didn't there used to be a breaker in the UK who specialized in 928's?

Yes agreed - the same vendor had a replacement for that too - but it ws also a "domed" part - that was perfect for the **** insert but IMO not for the hatch switch.

Default How to restore the stock shift **** insert

I restored by **** insert as follows:

1. Paint over the engraved pattern with white paint. You don't need to be extra careful here except to try NOT to fill the engraved portion to the top.
2. Paint numerous layers of clear lacquer over the engraved portion, trying to FILL the engraved portion to or near the top.
3. Using successively finer grades of sandpaper, sand off any overpaint that got onto the top of the **** insert around the shift pattern.
4. Polish smooth.

You will end up with a well-defined shift pattern in white (or some other color) protected by clear. I did this about 15 years ago and my original **** insert still has a sharp white shift pattern.
