We are looking to add inventory before the website goes up; hopefully I can strike a deal with James and end up with most/all of the good stuff. I feel bad for him to have to get out of it so soon.

Unfortunately, no.
I don't know him personally, and I wished him well, but based on the decisions he's made regarding his car, supercharger install, etc., I just had a feeling this was going to end badly.
I do know that he was laid off a year or so ago, so it could be that he's found gainful employmnet in his previous field of work and has decided to abandon this venture in pursuit of that - which would explain a lot. Boy, I sure hope so.

So, for all you people planning on taking apart 928s and making a fortune...beware. There is a huge glut of pieces on the market and there are very few people putting these cars back together, right now. General repair work continues, but major stuff will frequently result in the car getting parted out. If you look around, there are dozens of these things sitting around that people are trying to sell parts from. This is a normal thing that needs to happen, for the value of the cars/parts to sky rocket. There can be no doubt that lots of 928 pieces are currently being trashed/recycled...since the cost of storing/shipping the pieces exceeds the current value. True dismantlers that know that this is part of the "normal" process , simply continue and hold on, for the long run.

That's a good question, and something I am attempting to ascertain from 650 miles away. I will not sell junk parts; therefore, purchasing the whole lot from James, regardless of price, doesn't interest me until I know what he has.
I don't know if I'm part of the "you people" group, but I would like to make clear that I am not in this to make a fortune off of fellow 928 owners. For one, I realize that this isn't the right business to make a fortune in. I do, however, need a way to make a living that I enjoy. I love cars, I love 928s, I love working my tail off for something I enjoy, and I love being able to have the freedom that comes with running my own business. The great thing about that is as our income grows, we can branch out into new parts, bespoke parts, and parts for other models--all while still being able to sell used parts to the 928 community.
I was a customer for years with my race car (still am). I saw and experienced what I didn't like, what I really didn't like, and what I liked. I took that and set out to start a business that is customer-centric with no exceptions. After several months of strictly following that rule, we are still here and growing. As I said before, I truly appreciate those that have trusted us, purchased from us, and even referred people to us, as that is what has kept us going.

Yesterday on ebay an 87 S4 engine minus intake manifold with alt, p/s pump and exhaust manifolds and with less than 80k sold for $510! Great news for the needy but not so as a collector.http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWAX%3AIT

I know as a buyer I wouldn't buy anything unless I had confidence and trust. I would pay extra to not wonder if I were getting crap.
Why do all those electric items on ebay say "works well"? Have they each been tested? If it were 928 Intl they wouldn't have to even say that and you wouldn't wonder about it anyway. Unless you can foster that kind of trust, this could never work well as a business.
Mark B, I think you could have that kind of reputation and I hope you stick to selling quality stuff rather than shoveling out crap to the cheapskate masses, there will always be parted out cars by individuals for them to get cheap parts for their $1500 Porsches.

I guess so but it's just the way things are in the 928 community. No offense intended. Let me rephrase that.
These cars used to be pricey but lately they are worth nothing and now there's a large chunk of owners who have them because they are cheap or 'lower priced'.
These wonderful, smart owners know value when they see it and because they are wise, they aren't going to pay alot for their parts. Since the silly car isn't that big a deal in their important lives, they may not be willing to devote resources that could be used to pay for saving baby whales and other noble uses of money.
That means that it will be deemed appropriate, after introspection, to buy unknown parts from unknown characters on ebay even if the quality isn't up to what they deserve for their wisdom and good ways.
So in other words, Benton could possibly slog it out on ebay against that or stake out a niche based on reputation.

The downside is like many other expensive hobbies....they might be cheap to "buy"...but end up being very expensive to own-restore....especially if you pay someone to do your work for you....
Until all the neglected beater 928's have hit the wrecking yard, the rest of the nice ones will suffer lower values from it........ I don't think that will happen anytime soon....5-10 years...

Some die so many can live is one thing. This has helped me keep cars on the road.
Get all non-concours units off the road so gold-chainers' garage queens are worth big money is something else entirely.
The worst thing for everybody except the very high end guys is losing these from circulation.
Parts too. If you can't sell chunks, at least get them into the hands of folks that might somehow use them.
