just found out the hard way that my car will start without the clutch being pushed in(yes it was in gear). i'm currently away from my manuals and schematics, is it normal?

yes its normal there isnt any clutch lock out either put your foot on the clutch or put the trans in neutral,
always set the hand brake

Yikes is when you do it with a push button remote hooked up to the starter with the ignition on and you are in front of it.

BTDT, but just once.

Almost got killed by another tech that did it and the car almost crushed me.

It happens.

Yep, normal.

When I suffered clutch failure a few miles from home, I drove it home clutchless. Rev-matching for gear changes.. but when I was forced to stop at traffic lights, I'd turn the engine off, and then use the starter to get me rolling in first after lights went green. Even on a slight incline..

I figured worst case was I destroyed the starter motor.. but that was better than pushing it into first with the engine spinning and potentially damaging the teeth on first gear.

interesting. i'm not bothered by it, kinda like the idea i don't have to push the clutch in. i just thought it had a safety feature built in

I think Porsche selects safety features on a presumption of a certain level of driver responsibility - including in this case...

That was actually normal at one stage.. back in the days before the idiots started using law-suits to make their own stupidity someone else's (expensive) fault.
