Oh well. The 928 seems to enjoy the fhickened oil. Like I said, I do things my way, and at the end of the day I'm more than happy to come back and say I was wrong and stubborn. My bad.

You've got professional mechanics, engineers and scientists trying to help you on this fairly serious hobby board and you are kind of toying with everybody. Makes me tired. You must be bored to death in the Navy.

Its just a shame you can't do your chemistry and crude physics lab experiments on a 4 cylinder toyota and treat the 928 a little more conventionally. Not the place for risk. Kind of wasted effort, at least on the 40 through 80 year old professionals and engineers that make up the enthusiast group on these, the most challenging and rewarding of Porsches.

I mean, I can fill the crankcase with sunflower oil and wipe the paint down with kerosene and swear by its benefits but its all nonsensical at the end of the day. Put the right weight oil in it and be done.

Ahh, let him have his fun, sooner or later he might be talking to himself, and then have a serious issue. Then the real test comes, with who answers.

Chris, I hear you, I really do, but I don't think anyone's answered with a statement stronger than "That's how we do it".

Nonetheless, the car is running better with the thickened oil. I can now say without a doubt that the 928 enjoys thick oil, which opposes everything I've learned about oils. Just another case of the 928 is more than unique.

Maybe one day I'll be able to say face to face that I was wrong to the good people of Rennlist.

Oh well, time to slam another.

But am I wrong to challenge Rennlisters?

Who doesn't love a challenge?

I guess in the future I'll just shut the StrekStrekStrekStrek up about the things I do to my car. Every fix I've managed has been met with ridicule anyway. My reflective tape on the intake tubes is considered absurd here, even though it fixed a problem.

Oh well, what else is new?

"That is how we do it"
What if Porsche said this to you? Would you then change you mind?

I think I have an Panorama article floating around here where Porsche spelled out exactly what oils they recommend.

Be sure to let us know how it goes if you decide to do any track days with that grade of oil

There is a very fine line between being stubborn and being ignorant. For the sake of your very nice car, I hope you're right. It would be a terrible thing to lose such a vehicle because your ego or pride, or whatever, wouldn't allow you to take the good advice of the folks who have taken their time to share their concerns with you.

the Porsche oil chart was posted, many experience members chimed in, that would seem to settle it:
a good synthetic, 15-50 or 20-50 for hot climes, but hey, whatever...on to more important things
