Default 86 compared to 86.5 regarding buying.

I have been in the market for an 86.5 928. There is a very nice 1986 on here I am possibly interested in. I know the difference in upgrades and would prefer them.

My question is would you let the fact that it is not an 86.5 deter you from buying the 86 which seems to have been maintained very well.

Also becasue the 86 is a 6K car, should I assume I need another couple of thousand to get it where it needs to be?

Thanks.

To me, it would be only a minor consideration, only important for track use or very aggressive driving or maybe mountain duty.

Money depends on the car condition, can't say for sure. If the 86 is truly maintained well, then you could probably space the spend out and stay below $2K in first 18months.

If it's this 86 you're considering, I wouldn't hesitate.

I've got an 86.5, 5-speed, LSD, 133k miles, sport seats, lowered with Koni shocks & eibachs, new clutch, new rotors/pads recently, $20k in maintenance since 2001 (with records to prove it--it is ridiculous) for sale. It is Guards Red on black. Car runs like a top--I drove it on a 1,000 mile road trip recently.

Mechanically, the car is as solid as it gets. You really have to see this stack of records to believe it. Brand new parts in the last 5-9 years: MAF sensor, radiator, rad hoses, front engine seals (oil pump, front main, cams), clutch master, crank position sensor, clutch hose, oil cooler hoses, oil pan gasket, tie rods, lower CA bushings, A/C compressor, receiver/dryer, A/C control head (factory new, not used), A/C expansion valve, new left taillight, rear shift coupler, shifter ball socket, ABS sensor on one side, PS high pressure hose, PS suction hose, thermostat, plug wires, valve cover gaskets, DS door handle assy, rubber intake boots, windshield washer pump, fuel tank sender, headlight washer pump, window guides, CV boots, heater control valve, upper hatch latch, hatch release motor, lower hatch latch, drivers mirror motor, ground strap, and the lower fan shroud...! The engine bay is spotless.

I bought it to fix a few of the issues and resell. I've fixed a few things, but right now I just don't have the time to finish it. The only real issues are that the A/C needs some new seals to fix a leak, the front end needs a respray (hood and fenders don't match, bumper covers are slightly faded, PS fender has dent above the wheel I am repairing and will be ready for paint), and a few things here-and-there that are pretty standard for a used 928 (interior cosmetics & scheduled maintenance). Paint work will probably be in the $1500 range. The rest of the paint/body is in very good condition with almost no dents to speak of. I think someone repainted the hood at one point, so it doesn't match the rest of the front end. No wrecks.

I would sell it as-is with new tires and refinished (to your color choice of powdercoat) 7" and 8" manhole wheels for $6500, or refinished D90 GT forged wheels for $7000. To get it back to 100%, you would probably be looking at $6500 + $1500 (paint) + $1k-$2k in miscellaneous parts depending on whether or not you do the work yourself. This would be a very nice car that would be a beauty for under $10,000; I just don't have time to work on it right now with the other stuff going on around here. I could be ready to sell in about 3 weeks. If I did all of the work mentioned, I would list it for around $12,000.

Shoot me a PM or email me at mark@theninesource.com if interested.

I just booked my ticket today to fly out to see the 86 that Ted has. If it looks anything like it does in the pics I will have my first 928!

Further to this discussion, if it's not that important (the diff between 86 and 86.5) then you might as well consider the '85 in your search. They are the same animal. With Porken's add-ons, it is a sleeper.

It's all about condition. 86.5 cars are very good, but I'd take a 79' in good condition over a 86.5 in poor condition any day.
