Question [Off Topic] Affordable Accommodation in New York?

Wife and I are visiting the US and want to visit New York before heading back to Sydney.

Can anyone recommend some 'affordable' accommodation in New York? I'd like to visit the 9/11 area and the usual tourist haunts from Wednesday through Friday. We are coming up via Washington on the Vamoose bus .. lol! great name.

Looked at all the online booking sites and wow .. there are some options but man expensive too .. hehe!

Any help appreciated.

I have friends that rave about short term apartment rentals. See http://www.airbnb.com or search craigslist.

Starting a thread in OT would be good too, quite a few OT regulars live in the New York area.

Inexpensive in NYC most likely mean a bedbug ridden hotel try expending your search to staying within commuting distance maybe? the train system map is available online at mta.info

Very good point. Apparently there is a huge bed bug problem in NYC (and other places as well) right now. This issue has been getting quite a bit of publicity lately.

We heard about the bedbug issue. Wasn't sure whether it is still a problem or not.

Bronto, thanks for that link. Brilliant! It's starting to look like we may have to change our plans (in Washington) and maybe try again next visit. Bugger! Thanks for all your responses.

Bedbugs are a huge problem right now. I would not stay at any inexpensive hotel (not to say that larger ones or expensive ones aren't affected either).

There are nice hotels in Long Island City (1 stop on Subway to Midtown and great views of Manhattan). Also try Hoboken and Jersey City as well as Edgewater (all 3 are in New Jersey and just a very short train ride or ferry ride across to Manhattan).

Check brands like Hilton, Marriott, Starwood, etc.

You can email me on my home account miked_r (a-t) yahoo (d-ot) com as I live on Long Island and know New York very well.

Also, a bit far away but 2 nice hotels can be found in Great Neck, NY a nice little hamlet on Long Island (The Andrew and the Great Neck Inn) which are 30-35 minutes from Manhattan by train (and 1 block each walking distance to the train station; frequent service as well daily, less on weekends; about $20 round trip per person).

Good luck!

Have you tried looking for hotels in Brooklyn / Queens? I know there are some decent hotels in the area where I live in $100-$120/night range (need to double check, but should not be too far off), but you will need to take 30/40min ride on a subway to get to the center. I'm sure there are places for half that much, but as noted above, I would stay away from them - bed bugs might not be the only or the biggest problem in those places.

Cheers!

Come on. How many times do you get to NYC. Man up and pay to stay in Manhattan!
