Hi guys and gals. My 86 odometer quit a couple weeks ago. I got a new MPH gear from Roger, and followed Dwayne's most excellent post with pics on pulling the pod and odometer. I did the filing of the burrs and made sure there was no old gear material left, and spun the gears, felt no binds, etc. Put the odo and cluster back together, back i the car, and got a tenth of a mile when the odo quit again.
Second time around (went much quicker) I felt that perhaps the stepper motor did not have enough clearance between its screw and the odo gear, shimmed it so there was a RCH clearance, everything back in the car, voila! odo worked, for 124 miles.![Mad](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/mad.gif)
Now I'm looking at 3rd time today. I couldn't find Dwayne's second post on odo checking of clearances etc. befoe reassembling, can someone point me to that, or tell me - is there anything "special" I should be on the look for? I really don't want a fourth go at this.
Thanks,
Dennis

Even after filing the "burrs" I found I had a reoccuring lockup and non functioning ODO. So, I shaved the burrs absolutely flat with an exacto knife. After that and a fair amount of testing my ODO worked for a few miles and then locked up again. I then discovered even though the drive felt free when spining it with finger pressure, there was a problem with the arbor length of the new gear and the shaft between the e ring and the frame. Ultimately I left the e ring off the assembly as there was no easy way to reduce the lenght of the gear "arbor" itself. The gear is captured behind its mating gear so it "appears" as if the e ring is redundant. I have been running it this way for several hundred miles and no more lock ups....ODO working fine. Perhaps not the best solution but if it works?

I had similar issues with the replacement gear,
seems the mold it comes out of isnt the finest and lets plastic ooze past while its being formed

All excellent suggestions, although I think I'd rather not separate the numbers if I can help it. I will re-look at the nubs, use an exacto instead of my small files, and leaving the c clip off seems like an excellent work around as well. Thanks for your help!
