Default Painting 1/4 glass rust +

Our '86.0 is low miles, but the quarter glass channels were rusty and some PO repairs were poorly done. Made a booth in the shop. Three M, Du Pont, PPG all made money on this deal. Nothing like name brand masking tape.

Looks good...Im doning the same thing right now but no inside garage. mine will have to be under a metal cover.

How are you venting? moving air? Without air movment the airborne paint will rest on the car and you will have a ruff finish. ( I was told )

Looking forward top updates.

I'm a little incompetent at uploading photos, so it may be a bit 'till I properly up-date. I do have a pic of the venting - but it really isn't "safe", as the fumes pass through an electric motor. With urethanes the dust and vapor aren't as combustible as laquer, but it still isn't something I'd advertise as proper. You can see the furnace filters in the roof of the tent. I've done this before. When the car is small or the area to be painted isn't large the 'dust' and solvent buildup can be kept within safe limits. The best is to use an old style furnace blower with the motor remote from the squirrel cage. Use on suction, of course.
The perimeter is drain tube, so the booth is downdraft. The plastic is very clear as the lights are outboard - also a safety feature.
The little woman and I popped the glass, as she has experience because we did her '63 'vette back in the 70's (we also did a few Triumphs, which have windshields put in the old fashioned way, as our side glasses are). We left the interior panels in and used about a million plastic trim crowbars.
The galvanised coat is odd on the quarters as it is a very defined coating and the rust can creep at the very edge of the coating and underlying steel. I'm all about margins, as this is where rust creeps due to differences in oxygen levels.
Used PPG rust resistant prime (271), PPG acid, neutralized all after grinding away the rust.

Is that a Merkur XR4Ti in the shot as well. I had one of those. Fun car. Turned the boost way up and put alcohol injection on it. When you go way into the red on the boost gauge there is a loud buzzer and the computer cuts the fuel.

Ummm. Just read your signature. I guess it is. I recognized it by the speaker grilles and the first aid kit in the rear parcel shelf and the quarter window shape. didn't think to look at your signature. Got all my parts from the Rapido Group. Russ was a really helpful guy. Learned all about that driveshaft donut when it flew apart on me. Had a Borla stainless system on it. Sounded pretty good. Hated the window switches. rebuilt them several times.

Our kid's XR's have jumper wires and instructions for getting the windows up when the switches fail. They've been repaired too many times. I think the switch is the same as a 951 internally!

Wow. They were great cars in their day. Super fast if you tricked them out. Drove unlike the other domestic cars of the era. Should have kept it for the $2000 I got for it.
