Have you tested it?

What's the best way to test for leaks without wasting R12?

Not personally, but it would cost more to re-form the seal on the can than to just sell the real stuff. Do you test to make sure olive oil really is olive oil? Actually, long ago I did take a 30lb tank of R134a (that I got for an unbelieveable deal on eBay in fact) down to a friend's shop once to use his $$$ refrigerant identifier to see if it was really R134a, and it was.

I have seen cans that did not contain R12, and no, I do not test olive oil, but I damn sure test freons.

Wow, I guess there's a first for almost everything. Did it look like the metal seal was tampered with? What was inside?

I got caught once on eBay. 30# can of "r12" full of water with the seal intact.
I now buy locally and test before payment.

Although Freeze-12 is not the infamous barbacue gas/lighter fluid (propane/butane) mix (that's Duracool), it's 80% R-134a with some other HCFC that is said to make it a compatible with mineral oil, although such use is illegal as the law requires evacuation and flushing before using any of these "alternatives" as well as installation of new connectors and labels specific to that product.

Best for many reasons already cited by others to go all the way to R-134a or stay with R-12.

a magic man in Texas sells it, and is very helpful when your trying to refill your car as well.

I think the cans had just been silk screened, I have seen hydrocarbons and 134a mixes.

I tested the stuff we get from our guy in TX and it came out showing 99.7% r12, well within the limits of my old machine of being pure, which my guess was that it was 100% pure r12.

We see very little of the blends in cars any more, nothing like it was ten years ago.
