Default Update: Throttle Lever Roller Bearings Replaced (photos)

Since I have most of the top of the engine off right now, I decided to pull the throttle junction apart (note: PET calls it a bracket, but that seems too nondescript). When apart, I found the spindle, that the three throttle levers sit on (accelerator lever, throttle body flap lever, and cruise control lever), had some noticeable wear points exactly where the roller bearings in each lever sit - it seems like the bearings were not turning anymore, and there was metal to metal rubbing. I ordered a replacement spindle from 928 Intl that was in much better condition than mine.

Since my bearings are probably not operating properly, I was thinking about replacing the bearings with new ones, much the same way I did with the flappy and throttle body bearings. I only found one supplier, and a sample I ordered from them turned out to be of far lower quality that those already in the levers.

Without a replacement bearing set, I was thinking to clean the ones I have. I ran an extra part I had through an ultrasonic with 6 parts water and 1 part simple green. While it did a good job of removing the dirt, the heavier bearing grease remained, and I was not impressed with the results.

Any thoughts on how to go about cleaning these bearings? Or even better where you can order a replacement?

Thanks,
Dave

Roger@928srus.com has the new bearings with both edges sealed if you only get the single sided sealed bearing then the seal goes to the outside of the intake to keep out dirt

What size are they? A Radio Control hobby shop might have something nice in the right size. I know I have a basket of spares, most double shielded and sealed in metric sizes.

Opps, those sound like the bearings I replaced in the intake (flappy bearings), and throttle body. I have posted a pic of the bearings I need to replace. They are a different size compared to the flappy bearings - of course...

I did check with Roger a while back, and he said that the bearings I need are not available on their own...you have to buy the whole assembly which was costly. If possible, I would like to try and rehab what I have, but am not sure what to clean with since break cleaner will eat at the plastic liner, and super clean will attack the aluminum.

Are these pressed in? I haven't inspected my setup lately and my car is 2200 miles from here so I can't step out and take a look. I've considered refurbishing this part because my intake looks so good, and this piece is pretty corroded.

Also buy yourself two 4" x 3/8" masonry anchor bolts at Home Depot/Lowes etc. Put them in the old bearing and tighten. Give the bolt a whack and it'll pop the bearing right out.

Edit: Nevermind...trick is for throttle and flappy bearings.

Six separate bearings? Why am I not surprised ... the way they built these cars is amazing!

I think so. It looks like you can yank them with the blind bearing puller from HF that I bought for the intake and throttle body. I will give it a shot tonight to make sure. As for putting new ones in, it looks like the method dwayne shows in his write up would work for reasembly.

no worries, I was hoping it was going to be that easy, but when comparing sizing I noticed they were different.

You want 6 of the HK810RS bearings from Motion Industries. Dunno whether Roger stocks these, he definitely has the HK1012RS bearings for the flappy shaft and the throttle plate shaft.

As soon as you have dimensions the only issue for us non-bearing specialists can be what to call it. I think in this case they are 'needle roller cup' bearings, as the needles are retained in the cup casing. Any halfway decent bearing shop should be able to get them for you, if you cant find on the web...I buy bearings for r/c model engines periodically, and sometimes from overseas because locally odd sizes get costly - 6905-2rs locally $A23, from UK,$A3.50, postage pretty much the same.

You sure he wants the RS version? I haven't had a good look at the bearings in a while, but I don't recall there being a rubber seal on the throttle/cruise/auto armature assembly?

Given that arm doesn't have to hold vacuum, I'd go without the seal.

HK0810 vs. HK0810RS

Good point, Hilton, I didn't think about that, was just typing from memory. Should be no need for a seal.

One way to get these out is to get a 6 or 7 mm 1/4" drive socket to use as a ram, and an 11 or 12 mm socket to act as a spacer, then sandwich the throttle arm with the 2 sockets in your vice and use the small socket as a ram to push the bearing out and into the hollow of the big socket.
