Forward cup bushing or rear shift coupling. Or a shift fork slipped inside the gearbox. Does it engage first OK? If so, it's probably not an external linkage problem.

You can access the rear coupler from underneath at the front of the gearbox, above the torque tube. Determine if the shift rod is moving as the lever is moved to the rear. If it does, the coupler is likely slipping. Loose bolt? If it doesn't, look to the front cup area.

Where are you in east Tennessee?

Sounds like a bushing issue. I would just buy the kit and replace them all. I think there is a writeup here on the list on doing the job. If you replace all the bushings, you will be amazed at how much better it will be. I don't think it is too hard of a job. You can do it with jack stands in the garage.

Best of luck,

im reviving an old thread but i just now got around to actually doing this job kinda got side tracked being deployed to iraq and all lol any way. ive heard of metal bushings for these that are suppose to last quite a bit longer and make shifting very crisp. im having troubles locating someone who sells them anybody got a link?

We all went there to metal for a while, now are back onto plastic bushings in the rear coupler.
Stock is fine. Up front, it will need a plastic bushing too where the front rod is anchored to the front of the torque tube. A bit tough to reach but doable. Ball cup bushing.

What year is the car?

Search a bit here, you will find pictures and discussion. Look for transmission removal threads, too, because some of us posted good pictures of the whole shifter arrangement.

928sRUS can provide the parts, so can 928International. Both can give advice on what is needed.

Welcome back, BTW.

928sRus also sell Delrin rear coupler bushings. You could get those in leiu of OE.

Since you have to pull the coupler to replace, it may make sense to get under your car and inspect the rear coupler. If bad, might as well pull it out.

Yes, welcome back and hope you get to stay home from now on. Everybody already has you on the right track with your shifting issue. Get the car up in the air and get under there. You'll have to remove the exhaust and shielding, but that's about all.

Call Roger Tyson at 928sRus, he will tell you exactly what you need and provide it at a fair price.

My suggestion:

new rear coupler (or at least new plastic inserts)

new cone-ended set screw

new rubber boot that covers the above

new plastic ball cup liner

new set of plastic bushings for mounting shift handle to the shift rods in the center console area, inside car.

But do consider what Bill Ball suggested --- get it into the air, check it out, shoot a few pictures...let us see it.

hey thanks for the list. awesome i had taken a quick look under there and did figure about the exhaust and shielding thank you for the reminder tho. btw your shop is amazing. but im gonna run into a bit of a snag with getting it up taking pix for you guys as my shop time is very limited (borrowed space) but i will see what i can do. btw thanx for having me back kinda nice getting back to my projects hope i get to finish them before i have to leave again. Edit: i cant seem to find a liner for the ball cup just a new cup. but 928motorsports has an all steel one that needs no liner that last for awhile supposedly.

That's a nice piece, but pricey. May last forever, but first ask yourself is 15 years for the OE bushing good enough? There really is no wrong answer.
