No way to answer...

1) Define "boot".
2) What are you trying to do to the "boot"?

It is ALWAYS helpful, and usually necessary, to give the info on your car - model year, USA/RoW/Other, auto/five-speed, etc., etc.

If you mean the leather gaiter that forms over and down the gear ****, it,s a matter of brute strength. At the base of the current gaiter you have fitted, just prise this up, it,s clipped in, when thats loose get both hand,s wrapped tight around the gear ****, and basically pull like hell

Applying excessive pressure up or down on the gearshift can cause problems - the plastic bearing just forward of the shifter will break, and if the front shift rod cup is worn, it can pop off of the ball when you push down.

Liquid dish soap can help with installation.

I thought he meant the rear hatch. Had to think in Roger mode, bonnet and boot = hood and hatch.

Are you asking about installing new leather on the shifter ****, or removing the **** from shifter? Or both?

7 years of posts, not a single capital letter. Peter, please, blow the cheese dust out from under your shift key!

The only tricky part is getting the shift boot frame to clip back into the console- you need to lay it in there flat, and then apply pressure evenly all the way around- it'll snap into place. If you try to hook one end in and try to bend/flex the frame into position, it won't go easily.

Hadn't ever thought about the possibility that all the fractured shift rod bearings might be due to people pulling the shift ***** on and off. Interesting unintended consequence.

It'd be the easiest money the bodyshop (or corner garage, or dealer, or???) made all day. Don't worry about breaking anything, just put on a football helmet and a pair of chain mail gloves, open the sunroof, get in the car, sit your butt on the center arm rest, unclip the shifter frame, and pull straight up, hard, with both hands. The helmet and gloves will protect your face and hands when the **** comes free.

Seriously, nothing's going to break. Just do it.

The easiest and safest (to body and shifter linkages) way to get the shift **** of the lever is to pull the old boot up exposng the lever.

Clamp molewrench/visegrips onto the lever 1/4" below the **** then pry the **** upwards using a small spanner/wrench that fits closely around the lever.

Is it a left or right boot? This thread reminds me of a story I read or saw recently about a couple of old war veterans who had each lost a leg in the war, one left and one right, so each year they would meet at the shoe store and jointly pick out a new pair of shoes that they both like and buy it.

What are you going to do with the other boot?

Jerry

Left hand drive, right hand boot. Will it fit your new flush console, Jerry?

When I worked at Valvoline we had a ***** that worked in the lab, real A$$hole type.

We had a mass spectrometer that used Acetylene as the fuel, well the bottle was stored at the back corner of a lab bench, right where it made a 90 degree turn, in the far back corner.

He was changing the bottle, and I had just told him you are going to hurt yourself doing that in that manor, he told me to go fix something, he knew what he was doing.

Well what he would do was screw a top on the bottle and pick it up using the cap, but this time he got one with bad threads, and when the bottle was about half way up the cap came off and center punched him in the head.

Knocked him out cold.

It was also one of the funniest things I had seen in a while, he had a huge red dot in the middle of his forehead.

Thanks for the laugh Rob.
