Default Steering column/ignition switch question

I am buying another '84 that has a ignition switch stalk that has been cut off the column assembly. Also, the PO cut off the other side of the support bracket from the column. He had decided to do a custom dash with custom gauges...my plan is to put it back to stock.

Anybody ever have any luck in separating the column from the ignition stalk casting? It looks very much like there is no easy way to do that nor did Porsche build it for taking it apart? The manual shows it as one part.... I do have a replacement column but I would really like to avoid the R&R if I can.

I suppose another option would be to tig the cut offs back on the remaining parts of the housing (yes, disconnect the computers and battery first)

Just looking for an easy solution, getting lazy these days.....I suspect there is no easy way out. Any thoughts or suggestions? Anybody successfully separate the column and ignition sw housing?
