I was thinking the flex plate issue seem to be on the later models. At least from my reading. the euro has more HP as well and more desirable also from my reading. I haven't heard of flexplate being an issue on the 16v 4 spd. Anyone want to school me here?

I personally wouldn't even consider this car without seeing it first hand and getting a PPI so you would know what you are getting yourself into.

These cars need driving and she likes the comfort of her minivan, so someone is going to have to keep it going or the flux capacitor will fail on it. I guess that will be me

Here are a couple of automatic torque tubes.
The one with the groove on the end is from an 84. It should have been installed with a clip and shims. But when disassembled for transmission repair, it was found that the clip system had been omitted.
Without the clip system, the car could be subject to a similar situation of the driveshaft creeping inside the clamp, resulting in preload.
The 32V cars had more torque than the 16V non Euro, and could be considered more prone to the issue. Indeed, my 85 and 86 definitely would creep and preload. One has the Pkclamp, the other needs it.
The other TT is from an 89 automatic. Notice the larger diameter.
I've never had an 85/6 TT out for inspection, so I don't know what they look like.

Pretty much. But you don't know the history usually. Was it always there? That said, there have been far more 32V issues than 16V if any.
There is a Black Sea Engineering clamp (Constantine) that can lock the TT to the flexplate, or the Porklamp which is installable without TT removal.
When I put that 84 TT back into the 16V car, I used the Constantine clamp. Shims / clip are reportedly very finicky to properly install, which is why lots of them are missing.
The 4 speed transmissions seem pretty strong for the most part, but there are various issues to look for there as well.

You are looking to buy a 928 for your wife?!?
Been there, done that!
I won't bore you with the details, but let's just say that my (ahem) "transaction" involved several lawyers; a few DIY books; Bank of America; the US Army; the IRS; Wells Fargo N.A.; Dan Brindle (Hi Dan ); DEVEK; the California DMV; and some more that I have since blocked out.
And she STILL doesn't have a 928! Which in retrospect is a good thing.
Don't think I'm gonna try that again... but good luck!

cpayne - Back to your original statement "I understand the from some reading that 84 auto is a good transmission" It's bullet proof--well almost, it'll leak. But as Jesse the Body Ventura would say "it's one tuff mother".
