I'm replacing the roller on my driver side window regulator. I've noticed that the regulator arm is sprung away from the window roller guide track. If I let the arm travel on its own, it travels up on the inboard side of the black steel window guide. Is this normal? It seems like there will be excessive wear on the roller/rivit/track if I leave it like this. Or is this preload a way to keep the window from rattling or moving in the track excessively? I thought about bending the arm where it will ride alongside the track more closely, but am afraid this is like this for a reason... I'll be honest, I havn't
on this subject, so please forgive me if this condition is in there somewhere...

If it,s of any interest Mike, mines exactly the same, ie when not connected to the short guide it finds a position of it,s own, you have to spring it slightly to engage in the track.
Maybe it,s like that to ensure it stays in the track ??

roll down the other side window and see where that side rides. (Look into the top of the door)
from the info provided something sounds bent or the central bar support isnt in the right position

Is the 86' window different from the 89'?
I replaced my guides last weekend......does this pic help at all?

I don't recall the window actuator arm ever moving in front on the black pole, if that is what you mean. When I re-install the motor, it tucks down behind the black bar to get it in place and then bolts to the inner door panel. The actuator arm sort of floats right in the middle of the door. Bending the arm won't really do anything as the arm moves the window, but the window is bolted to the black bar by the guides. The guides can be adjusted to move the window in-out/up-down for fine tuning.

I think the condition is normal. It's all dependent where you check the fit. Since the guide bars and window are curved, the actuator arm flexes to follow the path. At top and bottom, there is no load. At the center, you need to flex the arm to make it to the guide. Chalk another one up as "over thinking it"...
