While Garrett's car is apart I needed to tackle this issue. In the winter after driving the windshield gets major condensation on the inside. I can SEE that the "fog" comes from the defrost vents when this happens. Its so bad the the paper inspection sticker inside is destroyed from getting soaking wet. It ALMOST drips from the glass. Was told it was the heater core with a hole so I removed and had tested....NO HOLES. Heater core is in good condition. The only issues I saw while taking it out was the gap between the evaporator and the box ( where the steel hoes for the heater core run out the firewall ) was packed with trash. The pics were takes after I removed said trash.
Any other ideas while I have this apart? I will be replacing all the foam seals in the box and flaps. Where else would condensation come from?
Do you have moisture inside the car or where it's being stored? Does it feel humid when you enter the car? Seats will be sticky feeling.
There is a lot of humidity inside the car when this happens. I don't think its a leak elsewhere because its easy to SEE the fog pattern starts at each defrost vent and fans upward.
If your heater core is good, then you've got another source of moisture in the car. When you removed all of that sound deadening material, was any of it wet?
I had a early 80's rabbit that had a bad heater core. It smelled like boiled off antifreeze inside that car and as Jim mentioned it felt sticky. I turned the heat off and everything was fine except I froze through the winter.
Stuck the water hose down in front of the firewall as shown in first pic.
The box is leaking at the firewall...you can see water dripping on the last pic.
Looks like I will have to pull the entire box to reseal??? The A/C evaporator will need to come out so my r12 will be history....or does anyone know of another way? Am I looking at that right before I dismantle anymore? I resealed the passenger side about a year ago but I've never heard of this middle box being a leak issue.

Any smell evident?
Can't say it had a antifreeze smell. Don't think seats were sticky either....but it has been since May that the car was running.

It was dry...but I only removed from the middle of the seats to the back of the car. Sound deadener is still in place at the firewall. I'm wondering if it would be better to remove ALL of it.

Warm moist air coming from somewhere in the system is the obvious culprit. Usually a heater core based on the symtoms......but, if the core checks out and the hoses/connections are good under pressure, then logically, (at least to me) and with no smell of anti-freeze, then it must have something to do with the condensate drains being clogged and the water subsequently being heated by the core externally and condensing on the colder windshield.
Re & Re the drains and it should clear up. (Pun Intended).
