That might be a good thing: I'm beginning to think that chasing the "turn the car into a freezer" award is just not worth it. The car cools enough to be comfortable on a <90 degree day regardless of humidity, and after finding that the comb flap was jammed and broke the pivot inside the vent I'll just wait till next spring and replace the whole front of the AC/heat box. Which will require pulling the dash, instruments, and so forth. Not a project for the next few weeks.

On to the next thing.

Well, I stuck the comb flap open with a shim, put the console back in, left most of the screws out (since I'll pull it again) and tried the car with AC.

I'm freezing.

MUCH more airflow, cold, in the 80's this evening and humid as heck and I could see my breath in the car with the AC on. I got chilly and had to mix some heat, it was that cold.

So yes, a broken comb flap or servo will result in a less cold system. Try fixing that or jamming the flap and see how it goes.

Now to buy a used box, learn how to take it apart, and start planning on pulling my box's front so I can fix this and the defroster flap once and for all.

The box is only held together by a few metal clips and sealed together with some sort of butyl, 3M stripcaulk is the new sealant of choice for most of us. I've taken mine apart a few times personally.

It's very modular and comes apart in easy to work on sections that slide together.

Great news!

Pretty amazing the difference the vacuum and comb flap functions make in the refrigeration performance. After a few of these episodes, where the pressures say way different than what the thermometers say, the easy first direction is to verify the vacuum and flap functions. IMHO, It's better to have the cooling available than not. If I put the slider at 70º, it cycles outside air and sometimes the HCV as needed to keep the cabin comfortable. As it was designed to.
