crossing the pond to 928 forum looking for guidance.
my parents have a 86 928S, garnet over garnet.
25000 miles
unfortunately AUTO tranny.
car not used for a while
cosmetically very nice.
door was repainted once (passenger), shopping kart kissed it.
we are the orig owner.
car lived in SoCal all it's life.
all stock.
i tried to get value off KBB, but they dont price cars this old.

any help on value would be greatful.
they are now in their late 70's and they can't get in and out without hurting themselves. just want to sell it.

Hey Mooty--2 things will help--what are the last 4 digits of the VIN (to determine if it is an 86 or 86.5 with S4 upgrades)-and any maintenance records/history (Timing Belt/Water Pump).

Pictures would also be of great help.

The low miles are attractive on one hand but the fact its been sitting means it might need $5000-10,000 in new fuel lines, rubber bits, vacuum hoses, etc.

Ball park for an 86 auto is $5k, the low mileage could kick that up as much as $5k, if the last 4 digits of VIN are over 1000 its an 86.5, and that adds $1k maybe $2k, deduct up to $4k if its been parked and not driven, roll two twenty sided dice, and depending on who is looking for that color and all the details, $6k to $12k, maybe even more than $12k if its in exceptional condition and fully maintained, but $16k would be my highest guess and that would mean two people with money both want it.

Pictures would help, and or have some of the SoCal guys look it over.

Man, you guys are rough. If it's a pristine example, price could be 13-15k.

Agreed. We saw an 85 auto with less than 15K miles trade for 12/13 ish not long ago.
Yes, I misread the mileage, thought it was 250,000.

It actually reads 25,000.

Put it on eBay with a ton of pics with no reserve. See what it fetches, it might surprise you

Mooty, where is the car now? If it's in the SF region, there are several folks in the area that will help you assess market value. If it's been stored well and has a good maintenance history, you should do OK. Like any Porsche though, longer-term neglect is tough on the value. If it's been stored well, market -may- be into the mid-teens, minus any maintenance that's due of course. Start with ~$5k in rubber parts and age-related mechanical stuff, and take credit for anything done to the car in the last few years. That will get you into the right range anyway. After that your next challenge will be finding a buyer who appreciates the car and it's potential, and has your sale price plus that $5k to invest.

Good luck! Post location and some pics/description, and I'm sure you'll get a better feel from this group for what it's worth. I'll also warn you that Rennlisters are pretty brutal on estimating value on for-sale cars, mostly because we know what the recovery costs are. Put the car in the PCA classifieds if it's in great condition and try your luck. Or put it on CL or e-bay and see how it goes.
