Default On the road again.

Hi guys,

I finally got my '83 US 928S 5-speed on the road. A couple of months ago I was asking about a problem with the motor suddenly cutting out. I took the car to a local shop that has done work for me, and they diagnosed the problem as a bad fuel injection processor, and a bad injector. I got a used processor from 928Intl, the shop fixed the injector, and it seems to be working fine. The motor pulls very strong, and runs very smooth.

Almost.

The motor seems to be slightly missing, or surging at mid-throttle. It suggests to me that the mixture might be off, like a lean miss. I checked the plugs, which where Bosche Platinum, but they were burning a little rich. I put regular Bosche plugs back in, and it didn't really make a difference. Does the mixture need to be set? I have a regular air filter (not K+N) in it, and am confident the timing is set correctly

The ignition switch is definitly worn, and its hard to get the key in. I only have the short, red-headed key. Did all 928's of that time have the longer key as well? I want to get another key, and fix or replace the ignition switch. On a related topic, could a worn switch have been (or is...?) causing the sudden loss of ignition? The fact that it was starting right back up again is suspicous. If so, is there any way this could damage the fuel injection brain?

Hoping to get the car cleaned up for the Larz Anderson show in September.

Thanks for the info.

Eric

Carl,
I used the cap and wires that were on the motor, the cap looked ok, the wires are nice silicone ones, but used of course. I guess I should get new ones, just on principle.

Hello Eric;

My car just shut down on me and I suspect it is a fuel injection problem after checking other things. What is the part number of the fuel injection process that you picked up?

I have two keys for my car, the red and a black one. I was not aware there was a difference in them other that the red one is give to the shop for easier ID during repairs.

A bad swith can cause you problem from what I have read but have you checked your relays. May be on the outs and causing your intermittent problem.

Hi Eric, The 'ol shark is looking great, I'm glad to see that!

I never had a black key either. The plug wires were from Devek circa about '97 so they are old now too maybe that is part of it. Have you checked the MAF?

Could vacuum leak cause these symptoms?
Best,
Chris

Default Part II

Chris!
Good to hear from you. (This is Chris's old car.)
I've had a vacuum gauge on it for a while, and its perfect. I don't know anything about this MAF, but would have expected the shop that recently did the work would have said something if it was bad. It runs pretty strong despite the slight miss or surge. I'm going to replace a lot of maintence stuff; air filter, cap, new plugs, wires. I just used the old stuff at first (which was working fine) just to see how the new motor was; and its great. Now I'll splurge on real tune up items.
Interesting that you never had the longer black-headed key either. I've read that a key shop can reproduce the 928 key from just a picture. I'm wondering if I take a picture of the short key, can the correct long key be made?
I'll look up the part number on the original fuel injection brain tonight.

Default Part Number

Tony,

The fuel injection processor part number for both the original and replacement unit is 928 618 106 04. 928Intl lists these as valid for years 81 to 84.
