Now imagine they were good 928 mechanics, that would be a busy shop.

Answering the OP question, yes you can, no it won't be easy, and in general won't change anything. VDO like many manufacturers doesn't constantly reinvent the wheel, so many parts may interchange to some degree.

as to the op question, why would you want to bother? That would look rather silly in fact. totally different dash/pod configs.
