I'm bet that 928 barn finds are probably more common than not..

I was thinking that too. You guys are spoiled in the US ... and lucky ... cars like this for cheaper than you could part them out for. I'm also often astounded that really good cars often go for such a low price ... wish that was the case here.

They are popping to the surface due to age, economy and folks reprioritizing (before the bank does).

Its happening across a lot of cars right now, but he 928 is in particular one that requires a learning curve to fix and has the aura of an impossible project with the rednecks we bottom feeders compete with to buy them. That goes for non runners and runners. The high end market looks like it is affected in other ways.

 

Sellers often don't realize what a HUGE hit needs paint is. There is NO MARKET for 928's to restore like there is with cars from the pre galvanized chassis rust era. As long as you can find a 78 for less than $5k with paint that can be saved short of a respray, cars that need paint are parts cars worth "maybe" $500 or less.

One of the guys I know that buys too many old 928 used to amaze me by the spread he would get between asking and selling prices.

Rule number one for sellers, don't let your wife see you turn down cash from a man with a trailer ready to haul it away, no matter how low ball the offer, turning it down won't be worth it.

 

Prep and paint DIY can be done fairly inexpensively, too. Just depends what you like to do with your time. Some guys live for that type of after-work hobby.

I've done a TR6 and a Datsun station wagon at home.
Came out well. When I finally do a 928, I expect it will be great.

JHowell did one at his house. The car looks fantastic.

 

People should be castrated for doing that.

I don't care if it's Corvette, Chevelle, or an MG. If you cannot afford to properly store a car, give it to someone who can.

 

I agree, the wheel/tire bottoms have been covered by years of leaf debris. That's a $400 car that needs $20000 of work to be a $3400 car.

 

So true, BUT my OP was based on mint cars not "abandoned" ones. I think based on comparable other makes/models a mint 928 should be worth closer to 30k. I'm using Pantera's. 911's, Delorean's and some American muscle as a reference.

 

Situations like this get a lot of attention here b/c we know a little about the process and the oddities beg questions. A car like this is cheap to buy (and I don't mean at the asking price) and expensive to fix even w/your own labor. In all kindness, the seller doesn't have a clue and he compounds his mess with a pic that exposes something less that the truth. That may be a "barn find" but that barn hasn't had a roof for some time. I know something about how bad a barn has to be for an ins company to deny coverage. AND he is in a remote location. It's sad, but it's their problem. Bronto was all interested, but when the moment came, it wasn't worth his time. C'est la vie.

 

I was interested in a hobbyist sense, not as a buyer. So yeah, I'd have taken the evening to do it if it worked, but not altered my plans for it. Somewhat more interested in his NOS parts but (at this point) he's not willing to separate them from the car itself. I still think it would be fun to go look at.

 

Seriously? I think he put to many 0's in that price. Parts car at best.

Also, I have a place in Boothbay Harbor, gorgeous area! Check out Fort Popham that isn't to far from Bath. Great little place to eat there, fishing, and view!

Jay, I've got a place in BBH as well (McKown Point) & I'm here as I write this. Hot for Maine, but no complaints here. The wife & kids are going to Montsweag Flea Market tomorrow and I was thinking about swinging by to take a look at this 'barn find' (based on the pic. that barn gets some serious light, & lets the sun and leaves in)

I have a place in Pine Point , Scarborough . Thought if I had the time to take a ride up Saturday and take a look. I'll probably drive up in my 928 this weekend as the weather is supposed to be pretty nice. But I think you guys are right...parts car if it has sat out that long.
