Default Muffler question?

Is there any difference, or advantage, of a stock '91 GT rear muffler over a stock '88 rear muffler? Besides the obvious oval tip '88 vs. dual tipped '91.

I'm installing a x-pipe on the '88, and I was wondering if there would be any reason to put on the '91 muffler while I was at it.

Many thanks!

GT muffler is lighter ( I think) and has dual outlets. I don't think there are any significant afvantages, however.

No power advantages... maybe weight advantage to the GT... RMB would be an advantage over both and cheaper...

Thanks, I didn't think there was much of a difference. I will compare the weight though. With x-pipe and no cats, I think the RMB will be too loud.

The GT usually has the small intermediate resonators and they will silence just about nothing. If you fit the x pipe and want to run with rmb, the answer is to cut out the resonator and fit a single muffler each side- I have a bullet muffler welded in there- it sounds awesome without being too obtrusive. Fabrication is a bit tricky though but fortunately I had good connections to a piping fabricator who have top notch stainless welders.

Otherwise stick to the rear muffler and hope the fuzz do not nick you.

FWIW, I've installed the X and while at it compared the two rear mufflers. The GT (production date stamped 01/91) was 3 lbs. lighter (26 lbs.) than the original S4 version (29 lbs.). The GT sounded a bit louder, but I only compared them at idle and a couple of quick revs, as the car was up on jack stands.

3 lbs. is 3 lbs., so I went with the GT muffler.
