Default Delco alternator in 85 conversion

After seeing a number of people here put a Delco CS130 in pre-85 cars, but not finding any later car conversions, I decided to try it myself....
I did get it to work, so now I have 9lb 110 amp Delco where the old 15lb lump was, and it even charges! Good to lose 6lb off the front. Plus the new alt has a bigger pulley, so it turns slower, giving me more horsepower...also good.

If someone can refresh me on how to post pics, I took plenty, as it isn't a straight bolt-on.

The later cars, mine, anyway, mounts the top of the alternator with two tabs, one on the front and another on the back. The two tabs straddle a long boss and the bolt goes all the way through both tabs and the boss. The Delco I got has one long boss on the top for the upper mount, and it didn't align with anything. Delco is also a lot smaller, so I was concerned about how the lower mount/adjuster would work. As it turned out, I made an adapter bracket for the top mount that goes where the stock alt mounted, and it has a boss that mates with the Delco. This moves the alt down far enough to use the stock lower mount and adjuster. I had to drill the lower mount boss in the Delco because it came threaded for an 8mm bolt, but that is the only mod needed to the Delco.
I also made some little brackets to put the stock shroud on and hook up the air tube. It isn't a tight fit, but at least it will give the alt some cooler air.

The stock alternator pulley is actually smaller than the Delco,(about 1.75" vs 2.1") but I wanted to see if it would charge at idle with a bigger pulley, and it does- I can run everything and still see 13-14 volts at idle. If necessary, the original pulley will fit the Delco and provide higher rpm for the alt if needed. I know Dave (Sharkskin) had trouble with that on his conversion.

I made drawings of the adapter, and will make more if anyone else wants to do this- I have to get more info about exactly what the Delco I used fits, so the results can be repeated. The wiring was just like everyone told me- simple with the pigtail from Painless.

The benefits are- a LOT less money, a 6lb weight loss, and less rpm on the alternator.
I am certain this make me much faster.....hehe...

Another way is to host the picture on your rennlist member website. Upload your pictures there and use the picture icon at the top of where you are typing your message.

And there is no 149k limit like with attachments.

The hosting space you get with the rennlist member website is a great benefit!

When I put one on my 84 I swapped pulleys to help it charge a little harder at idle. It's very easy to do if you have an impact gun.

Side by side Delco-vs-stock.
The pics show the size difference, the bracket I made, and a not very clear shot of the stock shroud on the Delco with adapters, and then how it mounts in the car.
If anybody is interested, let me know.

Thanks for tips on loading pics- I thought these were too big, but they downloaded OK...

Hmm, I don't see any pics- They are shown as downloaded in the "manage attachments" page, but they didn't come in with the post...? What am I doing wrong?

Pretty slick, boss.

Is there a choice of color for the cardboard pieces?

I like it, nice work. I just had my Bosch rebuilt for the second time, (90K between rebuilds), new brushes, replaced regulator and new diode pack for $100. I think I may switch to the Delco if it goes out again. Bracket looks great.

Ed, it depends (as you know) on how many I make- I'll probably finish the cad drawing and CNC it- make alot more attractive....that one is hand-cut quicky on the bridgport. I don't think they should be very expensive. I need to nail down which car that alt fits originally, and make little kit out of it, with bolts and whatnot. I also want to make a shroud bracket that goes all the way around the body of the alt. I will let you know...
I've never seen the volt gage in the car go to 14 before- it does now! I also notice it fits higher in the car, giving me more ground clearance under the alternator, which I am thankful for..

Thanks
Steve

Great work Steve. Sign me up for one!!!

My delco seems to get heat soaked after a while and I think this bracket plus fabricating the cooling tube back in place will work wonders.

Dan, your car, if its a 78, doesn't need that bracket- but it would be no problem to get the shroud mounts if your shroud is the same as mine, for a Bosch alt.
Bolts to the alt in 4 places...
