Default New DIY project - fire extinguisher mount

Must be in proximity to the invent in the PNW area but I have had good luck with ABS and plastic from local supplier TAP Plastics.

My idea is to create a low cost, sturdy alternative attachment to the more expensive, albeit nice, aluminum options out there. I am starting with dry chemical but intend to go to Halon as well.

l prefer to attach to the seat and be as inobtrusive as possible yet allow access to extinguisher easily and quickly.

Materials list:
(1) 14 x 10" piece of 3/8 ABS plastic sheet
(6) 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 10
bolts, screws
ABS cement
extinguisher (you choose)

Tools:
table saw
compound mitre saw
drill
router with round over bit

TAP Plastics cut the pieces to size for under $20 today.

Tomorrow I'll sandwich 4 of the smaller pieces and shape this to fit and attach vertically to the seat front. I have 8 way sport seats..YMMV. This piece of stock will be glued and attached to the 14 x 10 tray which I'll fit to the bottom of the seat and bolt accordintly. So the tray is secured to the seat and seat front and stay clear of the rails and controls (again 8 way have manual fore/aft and incline).

I'll use my router to round over all the surfaces and secure the quick release hold for my fire extinguisher to the tray. Will post of pics once complete.

Should drink less coffee ......

I don't think plastic is an appropriate material choice... why not Aluminum ?

BTW - You do not need a big plate like that..

The Brey-Krause mounts are really expensive but a Stable Engergies FEM2 is 'only' $50. And a proper Halon extinguisher is going to dwarf the cost of whatever mount you get or build anyway, no?

Thanks guys...I'm a wood worker so ABS to me is a material I have tools for. Not setup for aluminum but I should learn to work with it someday. Rob...thanks for the link, I'll get my Haltron/Halon from these guys. I like their mount design too.

I have a this extinguisher seat bracket on it's way from my sheetmetal guy.

Steel. Weighs 1#, powdercoated black.

It's designed to sit as low and as close as possible to the seat, without dragging on the carpet or mat.

It's works with the Safecraft quick release pictured here:

Stromis, if you want one, let me know.

Jim - is that picture upside down? looks that would have to be the orientation... the front ciut out is where the mount goes on right..

Look like a very good combo

Thanks Alan,
Iso view, mount on front, truss on top. Bracket lays over top of front motor assemblies, which is why there is a hole access manual seat adjustment, just in case.

Oh OK - interesting... Are you going to make up a batch... looks interesting.

My mount comes up underneath but ends up in a similar place.

Stephan, Alan,
I would like to make up a batch, but first let me get thru fitting up the first one, next week.
Alan, is yours is a Brey-Krause quick release? Would be interested to get the mounting specs for that to add it to this bracket. More universal.
Stefan,
I will start another thread for my bracket fit-up. Sorry to hijack your thread as much as already did. I just figured I already did the "homework" & my sheetmetal guy is really reasonable.
Should be able to get more made up mid-to-late Aug. Start saving for a quick release. Day aint cheap!

Does anyone here (non-racer) run an underhood extinguisher system? Is there a recommended one? I like the idea of pulling the pin from inside the car and not dealing with lifting the hood and giving another air source to a fire. And yes-I'm going to get halon.

Thanks in advance,
Michael
