Mark and Mike - Thanks for the emplanations. My car is running the stock bar now, but I do about 3 or 4 track days a year with it. Realistically, it will never be a track beast, but it will get some suspension upgrades in 2011.
I'll probably do the triangle reinforcement since it doens't really look like any more work either way. No need for more pics for me. A single 1/8 plate weld should be pretty straight forward. I guess if you wanted to go overboard you could always do both.

lots of work around the house lately, 928 had to wait :/
Here are pics of the failure, and of the attached left side (last two are left). As you can see, there is reinforcement similar to, but wimpier than, the others that have been discussed (looks like |/ but the slash just being a flat piece, not a square iron like Carl's and not a full triangle), which obviously was insufficient. No track time since 2006, just New England sinkholes.
[Garage needs a sweep...part of the overdue work around the house...]
