transaxle service recommendations - 1979 5 spd

Default transaxle service recommendations - 1979 5 spd

I have the fuel tank and half shafts out for rework and was looking at the transaxle assuming it had not seen any service in a while given the state of the rest of the car.

I did a search and did not find a procedure outlined.

I did see a write up for a later model on drain and fill was wondering if i should flush with some new fluid or other solution before adding new synthetic fluid. Any recommednations and tips ( fluid types, tricks of the seasoned owners) greatly appreciated.

be sure to remove the upper fill plug BEFORE removing the two drain plugs. It is often nearly impossible to get the fill plug out and after you drain the fluid you are not driving anywhere for help !

Thin fluid. We use 75/90 and that can be too thick, for some of the early transmissions.

Are you saying I should use something thinner than 75/90?

Any early car users have experience / preferences?

I would only use 75W90 NS in the early transmission.

It will be a little stiff when cold. But it will be much better once warm.

I've been using 75/90 Mobil 1 LS. Added a small container of Amsol Slip Additive for LSD chatter and seems to be working fine.

Lots has been written here about choices, esp. Redline MT.

But when GregBBRD makes a recommendation or provides cautions, then that always takes precedence with me over anything in the archives.

What is the issue with the fill plug removal? Any tips / hints or things to avoid?

For unknown reasons it gets really tight sometimes you need to remove the rear diff cover and attack the plug on the work bench so you might want to have the paper gasket handy......

I had that trouble with mine ... just would not budge, even using the longest breaker bar I had, and nearly dragging it off the jack stands ... even swearing didn't help!

I was going to resort to taking the cover off and attacking it on the bench ... then I tried a rattle gun and it came out easily first go. I was nervous about using it thinking I might stress the case but I put it on the lowest setting ... and it came straight out without any prolonged impact at all.
