Then the cats were not the problem to start with.

I also have to have my cars inspected, it sucks, but we do a lot of repairs on cars that will not pass, so we have a good handle on that.

Crossfire injection.........I'll bet that most here won't know what that is until they google it!!!
While resale of used converters are illegal unless the units are recertified,I would bet that a lot of people have a used set of front exhaust pipes for sale.

I've got two sets of factory downpipes rusted-through. Struggling with patching them prior to inspections that are due in July.

For another car, I bought a factory replacement cat and downpipes from Eastern Catalytic, a manufacturer in Pennsylvania. Before buying, I called and discussed the application and technology with their technical service folks. Mongo, you might want to do something similar. They were helpful.

The old cat that was removed had been punched out and was completely empty - I could see straight through it.

Also, in CA any reputable shop will not install a non CARB approved cat, so buying a 49 state one out of state and bringing it here is not an option as the test station will look for the CARB approved plate on it and fail you if they can't find one!

I don't know how that could be, a new cat reading like one that was not there, unless it was not lit up for some reason.

If it's stamped on one side, I don't know how they could see it if it were to be welded up wrong; and I have seen them stamped only one one side before..

I had a friends 82 corvette over a couple of months ago.I got brought right back up to speed on crossfire injection REAL fast.Good thing that I'm a pacrat.I still had the factory training manuals sitting in the attic.
I've got another friend thats got a 84 vette with it too, never seems to have much problem with his,but he runs the car every month and drives it to work that one day also.

They really are not that bad, far, far better than what they replaced that is for sure.

Andy... that's what ya get for drivin' that new-fangled stuff. I bolted in a replacement cat in my 84 after the 'test' pipe rusted out, inspected, smogged, nobody said boo. I'm done with smog now, but really, are these clowns crawling underneath to look for cat stamps in your area? I'd bolt one in, and for all you know, that's the way the car arrived.

Not to beat the whole catalytic converter thing like a dead horse, but I'm creating a contingency plan 2-years down the road in case I won't get so lucky despite passing on Saturday. Magnaflow's 2" dual in/out is the only cat next to buying 2 individual ones that will work on the 928.

To respond to your reply a while back blown 87, are you saying that any muffler shop can expand the inlet/outlet piping from 2" to 2.5" for my application without damaging the center core of the cats? I am guessing if they cannot expand, than they can cut and weld 2.5" piping to it?

You are not going to make a 3 inch out of a 2 inch, but yes you can expand a cat with out much problem, we do it from time to time.
Not sure about a dual inlet cat though, that might be tough there.

This is just MHO, but none of the aftermarket cats are going to be any where as good as the factory unit, just a fact of life.

I ran mine today and it came out great, very low numbers.
We have almost the same test here in Georgia in the metro area as CA does, and it sucks.

That is one thing that gets more of my customers upset than any thing else.
Many of them that have been long time customers I just go ahead and do a test at NC if the car is in here with in a couple of months of when the tag is due.
Folks REALLY appreciate that.

Great! I just want to be sure. I will more than likely pick up one of these Magnaflow cats and have the inlets changed to 2.5" later. Smog is my worst enemy right now, probably even worse than all the fuel injection problems I had in the past.
