Default transmission advice needed

The automatic transmission in my 79 went out the other day. The guy at the shop said the pump failed and ruined the clutches and torque converter. He suggests that I rebuild it at a cost of 1600. However I don't have that much to spend so I was thinking about a used one. Do you guys think a used transmission is a good idea? Also I was told that they come in locking diff and unlocking diff how can I tell which one i need?

Thanks for your help
Josh

You 'need' a locked differential, but any will do.... just preference… most prefer LSD, but it’s not necessary. Decent chance your current diff is still good.

Others have gone used and done okay, it's a crap shoot. A know good (or warranted) used is not a bad option, but location really come into play with the cost.

While you are at it… you might want to think about upgrading to a 4 speed auto... at least I know they fit some of the older cars.

A four speed would be great. What other items need to be changed and what year(s) four speeds are interchangable?

I asked MrMerlin about this a while back and he had some good information to share, because I considered the same thing. I don't remember what exactly was involved, there was a length difference in the transmissions (slight) and a couple other things... but he should chime in soon!!

After further thinking, and all the work I've done to my car, I would like to convert mine to a 5 speed down the road!
