Don't fall for this old trick. They told you what you wanted to hear. Making you think you are getting a heavy discount when in reality, you paid for every single minute they spent on your car. I personally only respect honest mechanics that tell you exactly the way things are and not some sales pitch. Sounds like your labour was around $1700 or so. Most shops charge $100/hr and that's 17 hrs, about what is expected from a job like this. However with a hoist, it should be dome much faster.
The quailty of the work what really matters. So if they did a good job then all is well.
I've done my shifter cup on the driveway, WITHOUT removal of the exhaust (only the heat shield over the cat had to be dropped). I guarnatee they did something simmilar too.

I just checked them out on the BBB site and they have zero complaints.

3000teeth: hang in there man! We all get a little (or a lot) up$$ide down with these cars...it's the nature of the beast when you're restoring cars that are over 20 years old or older...just be glad you found a reputable shop, because they are few and far between...

What Gene said... you'll find the rare p-car shop with a couple 928 guys, full set of manuals, may own a couple themselves. You'll get a fair deal generally from these kind of folks. Helps to be knowledgeable beforehand, but what the hell? 2k for the car, 2k for a major tune-up... man, you're way ahead if it runs like it should. You can't buy a new pos for less than 20k that will touch it. Enjoy that first ride.

The shop I take my GTS to in OKC is a great shop. I completely understand that they have to make money to stay in business and aren't out to get rich on their customers. They charge book labor rates, and prefer to provide parts with their markup. However, often, there are things taken care of on the car that are no charge.
