If 89GT's didn't have RDK then I own the rarest set of 928 wheels in the world - 8 and 9 inch CS wheels with RDK sensors.

Fitted new to my 88SE in 1989 by AFN Chiswick when they sold the 88SE as an ex demonstrator car . (Which never had RDK fitted)

US market didn't get RDK until 1990 - however the ROW cars got it as standard in '89 (which for ROW is 358 '89 GT's).

Agree on the 930 wheel being the most attractive and appropriate wheel for these cars (making me happy to not have airbags). The CS wheels are uniquely artistic, but the Cup IIs are my modification choice. Hate the RDK system on ANY car, glad I don't have it, and being a mechanic by hobby, I much prefer the mechanical posi to the brake controlled one. I also much prefer the GTS shifter **** to the GT one and especially when combined with the "short shifter" modification.

It all IS a matter of personal preference...... and I am very happy with mine, which I have owned since 1992.

Question, did the 90 and 91 GTs come with a spacer between the rear wheels and the hub?

No spacer on the '91. And technically, you don't have a GTS shifter ****. You have a '91GT shifter ****. Just sayin'

As ROW '89 CS and GT had RDK as standard there are more 8" 928 CS wheels with it than without.

ROW '89 S4 had RDK as option. Only 10 where made, 5 manual cars and another 5 automatics, all German models, VINs 0061-0069 and 0071 meaning first cars were done with them by factory as demos but no one bothered to order any after that.

Having just picked up my very first 928 in June of this year and it being a '91 GT...

I'd have to say the '91!

im conflicted between the 90 and the 91

I prefer the PSD

I love the airbag dash to the 78 styled dash in the 89

But I like the modifications made to the 91, BUT I also like the trick electronic air intake slats which were on the 90 GT but deleted for all cars in 91.

So im conflicted, 90 or 91?

I would take any GTS over the GT though.

Didn't the '89 have a different ring and pinion gear set?

I have had a '90 GT with 50K miles and in super condition and I would still prefer my current '89 GT with 100K miles and worse condition. It seems to be more distinct to drive and less forgiving. The '90 GT was easier to drive and was less rough. No noteworthy difference in suspension - new on both cars. The '90 hade 18" wheels (235 + 265 tyres) and the '89 has 16" (245 + 245 tyres). Maybe the different differential makes quite a difference ?

I have the impression that the gear sets are straight-cut (or almost) on the '89 and therefore more distinct to operate. On the '90 it is diagonal-cut for better sync and therefore easier to drive. Is this correct ?

I think the motorized louvers in the front add little benefit. The improvements of the '91 far outweight the deleted flaps IMO. In fact the '91 has a passive flap the flips up at a certain speed (wind pushes it up). In fact with the SCer, you would normally remove the louvers, but I don't have them. So I was wondering why my car was running so warm... I forgot about the passive louver. I tucked it down and now everything seems to run about 10* cooler.

Ahh..I forgot about that one.. The Klingenberg Palloid cut rear gear set. Not quite straight cut, but not beveled either. Supposed to direct more power to the rear..at the expense of a little bit of noise..

Yet another cool aspect of the 89's

PET lists same part number for all G28/55 ring and pinion set. My take on this is that GT R&P is different than S4 and all GT's made use same cut style. Besided, '90 MY changes document specifically mention Klingelnberg palloid system being in use.

GTS 5sp R&P were done using Gleason manufacturing process where teeth are ground after hardening. I think this is different thing than Klingelnberg palloid cut style which only says what shape teeth are. Meaning both Klingenberg and Gleason can be used at same time.
