1989 S4....light troubles still
Does anyone have the wiring diagram for the lights on a '89 S4 ????
We have tried all the usual suspects.... Relay, Ign switch, wires at the pods....just can't seem to figure it out. If anyone has a wiring diagram or a link to a wiring diagram for the headlights on my S4 it would be greatly appreciated.

ok take out the compound headlight relay and open the cover take a thin strip of 600 grit paper and gently sand the all of the contacts in the relay then try it is should work again, my 88 had the same problem and this did the trick i eventually replaced the relay but it worked fine for a few years

Well did you check/change the fuses - there are 4, one for high/low beam on each side.
Check that you really have a solid ground at the headlight pod grounds. Do you have the wiring correct at the bulbholder?
Check that you have the main light switch connector fully mated with the switch - has anyone been in the instrument pod recently? how about the combination switch (wires/hi/lo beam/turns signals) has that been out recently...?
When did the lights last work - what has been done since ?
You aren't helping any by not giving the full story here.. history... warts and all.
928 headlight circuits are complicated - even with a wiring diagram you won't understand it all... so best to lay it all out...

I bought the car in November, I took it in last month to get safetied and this is the last gremlin. The lights haven't worked since I got the car and of course the guy I purchased from has no answers other than everything worked when he sold it to me....of course!!!
I don't pretend to be a mechanic, nor do I want to be. I am just relaying the questions that are asked of me from the person working on my car. And obviously I know right here on rennlist is my best resource for finding out info. We have tried the relay, fuses & ignition switch and he has check the wiring at the pods. That is all I can tell you.......sorry.

Tell him of the things I said to check above - its easier to do those than anything else initially and this may save you time (& therefore $$).
An alternative method to narrow things down is to power things with a jumper at the headlight relay socket. This will help figure out if the issue is before or after the relay.
Remove the HL relay - connect a jumper (with a 10A fuse in it) between HL relay socket pins 30 and 56a - see if the high beam headlights illuminate then? Then try the jumper between pins 30 and 56b - see if the low beams illuminate then?
If No illumination the issues are downstream of the relay - If yes they are in or ahead of the relay.
Report findings...

Isn't there a micro switch in the head light motor that signals it's time to turn them on when in the full up position?

Yes but its the same one that signals the pods are up to stop the motor driving - since they seem to work OK thats probably OK.
However if the headlight motor gets hot when the lights are up that would indicate this is an issue - feel it by hand after a few mins...
