i did this job about...... 6 times in the last 3 months. the boots would slip off after awhile in the car. i decided they were to small so roger sent me a slightly bigger set. then i had enough of the "hose clamp" style bands, and got a crimper and crimp bands.... not a single problem since...

Here is a pic borrowed from a posting on Pelican:
That's a great idea!
You could even use Gorilla Tape, then it would be semi-permanent, until you dismantled them again and cut it with a knife.

LOL, I hope to never need to dismantle them again.

OK, I have completed the CV boot replacement on the '79. It went a lot better than last time.

I did the '78 about 18 months ago, and only remember that putting the half axle back on the car was a messy PITA. While trying to get the first few bolts started on each end, I was getting grease everywhere.

On the 79, I used the metal end caps and tape as shown in the above pictures, and it went back together without the mess.

I am curious if you can put the metal cap on the ends?? I am hoping this would make reinstalling them a lot cleaner.

Answers:
You can use the metal end caps from later cars on the earlier models. The main advantage to using them it is a lot easier to get the half axle back on the car without getting grease everywhere while trying to get the first few bolts started.
Using the metal end caps requires only four new gaskets for the car, one per joint, whereas the original setup needed 8 gaskets.
Tim,
So where did you source the end caps? Do you eliminate the gaskets at the outside housing, wheel and transmission?

Thanks
