Default Rear Defroster stays on after turing off the key

So what is the secret to getting the relay to turn off when the key is turned off??
I had to use the rear defroster today and when i turned off the key the light stayed on I immediately disconnected the battery then the light went off . I connected the battery and the light stayed off
Then i tested system again with the key on and the defroster selected then turn off the key the light stays on this happens if the switch is pushed , for the timed cycle or turned for the constant cycle, the only way to turn the defroster off is to unplug the battery

Try turning the defroster switch off, turing the ignition switch off, cranking the engine and turning it off again.

Sorry...I couldn't get past this part. Its 145 degrees here in the south. What planet are you on?

BTW...this is electrical. If its not a ground then I'm done.

Relay x3

Its the relay not unlatchinng.Without checking the WSM it must be fed by unswitched 12v When you dis the battery you remove power from the coil causing it to unlatch. Sometimes just turn ignition of then on again and re-starting the engine cures it. When you start the engine this drops the volts sufficiently to unlatch it.

Its a relay fault - so a new relay would fix it... possibly repairable...

I've had to thump my relay with my hand to get it to shut off. That was the only time I've ever used it.

the reason I was using it in the first place was i went out and it was hot outside about 88 degrees then it began to hail and rain heavily to a downpour in afew miniutes the rear window was fogged over due to the frezzing rain that chilled the window so I hit the def switch .
I took the relay apart and readjusted the fingers to the switches but still no luck the ignition switch has been replaced in the last 4 months.
I would like to figure out a way to repair this relay, since it doesnt get used much Its not really worth replacing but i like everything to work as it should.

Wally your correct i put the relay back in.
and then pushed the switch to on,
it stays on with the key turned to off but if the car is cranked then the defroster light goes off

I lived with the problem on my '86 for years - because I am lazy...

If I named my cars, the 90 GT would be "the Cobbler's Child"!

Thanks Wally! I have this same problem with mine. I just decided to use the 'turn' function rather than the push button one. So now I know it's the relay (where's Jim B. when you need him? ).

And thanks for the thread Merlin, I remember doing a search but didn't find the exact situation and since I always have bigger fish to fry with this car I hadn't gotten there yet.

And Wally, I know exactly what you're talking about with that car. I get to do work on my car only when all of the other car maintenance lists are clear. The other lists don't seem to EVER be clear!
