Default 928 "Estate" at Thunderhil yesterday!!!

Well another excellent trackday is done for the 928 Estate...once again I managed to get 2nd place in the GT3 time trials....since the "winner" was a 2010 Porsche Boxster Spyder with R comps, carbon fiber brakes and PDK trans....why he was in GT3.....I dunno http://www.porsche.com/usa/models/bo...s/?gtabindex=1

320hp in a 2860lb car....ya it should beat the estate!!! However I was only 1 second off his best and put down a 2:06.9 and when we were on track together he couldn't pass me....the driver even was surprised when I told him he beat me in the TT....as he was convinced the Estate was faster!!!!

The camera died on the best lap, so here is a 2:07.9 I ran later in the day...

For those interested in the oil pressure "debate" the top gauge on the right is pressure....straight up is 50psi and pegged is 100psi

Just finished editing video #2

The best part is a battle with another rennlister near the end in his BMW 325is that is built to GTS2 specs which is the class the 928 estate would compete in as is!!!!

I don't really have ANY mods planned.....since my plan is to spend $$$ driving and improving my driving vs buying stuff for the car.... Sure an cool SC from Carl would ROCK.....but the car doesn't seem underpowered as is, unless I am running with a Z06 or something....

Probably the next purchase will be a new radiator.....as the car runs hotter than I would like and some type of data acquisition would help improve my driving too

first lap of second clip: Did the Mustang wave you by and then stepped on it?

Yup.....there were a few VERY nice GT 350 racers out there.....but in his defense that is the "power" section of the track & the 928 isn't exactly super powerful at only 200whp.....it happens quite often when you are driving "momentum" cars on track....

Fair enough. Looks like you are doing a really good job with the old beast!

Except for some DIY exhust work, mechanically, the car is pretty much stock, right?

Its SO stock its scary....

84 L jet automatic with open diff, 85-86 headers with no cat and a single exhaust

Old bilstein shocks with eibach's cut -1.5 coils
stock swaybars and bushings

Brakes are Stock S brakes with Raybestos St43 pads, braided steel lines and amsoil 580f fluid

Wheels are S4 rears all around with 245/45-16 BFG R1's (great tires)

we did reroute the oil breathers so they don't dump into the intake anymore and the breather is just a K&N filter on top of the filler....it gets damp, but not that bad really.....timing is set slightly advanced at 22' @ 3000rpm (spec is 20') fuel system is 100% stock

Its TOTALLY gutted...inner bumpers are modified in front (hydralics are removed and inner liner is "lightened" but sitll there) rear bumper is 100% stock with the HEAVY hydraulics......AC and airpump are gone, but we kept the wipers and fan blower (used for vent and defrost on a switch)...interior is nearly all gone expect for the gauge pod, it doesn't even have a key....starts from the switch above the shifter

It weighs just under 2800lbs nearly empty with excellent corner balance

Last dyno was a bit rich, but put down 195whp and 236 torque.....I did see as high as 205whp flash during the run....

I am 100% sure I could build another one (with a donor) for under $5k.....and thats with the $1300 seat thats in it!!

You could have some competition with the "black 79 x kibort-wester" racer that is lurking around. . It ran a 2:10 with the hill, (207-8ish with the bypass) but is only a 4.5 with no headers, no mods at all to anything, but it was about half way gutted, still had all the dash and ac stuff in it, but no bumpers. by the way, the rear bumper and shocks is about 30lbs. It just proves that the 928 can be a top of class car much cheaper than anything out there. to get that BMW to get 180rwhp, it takes some bucks, plus some substantial suspension mods.
You have found the secret for NASA GTS2. a stock 928, just gutted. you still only have stock wheels too! Wow, that means with 305s on all 4 corners, you would be killing it in the turns. that would be an EASY mod . Probably worth 2 seconds easy! 2:05 for a stock 928!! scot should be worried. but then again, why would he be. he has done what you have, but still has a stick, as bad as his trannie is. I think his best is a 2:04, but he has near 290rwhp, and did the 206-7s with the 250rwhp version. (with hill)

Good stuff! way to go.

Now, get you license all dialed in and do a GTS race! Ill probably be able to join you, but in the GTS5 class unfortunately. (holbert car was GTS4)

Hmmmmmmm..... interesting. There are a couple of realy cheap 928s (non runners) around here that I can have for under a grand (one manual one auto). Maybe I'll pick one up, gut it, sell whaterver is worth something and hit the track.

Good job! That car is amazing. Ugly as hell but easy, fun and fast to drive.Lets see if we can get a bunch of 928's out for a race next winter. It would be fun to swap cars around to see what woorks and what doesent work.

I did notice your oil pressure gage doing the funky chicken coming on to the front straight, Better check that out.

I was looking at the stock gage not the auto meter. Could just be a loose connection I also notice it fucuates during deceleration defore turn 1 and 9. Just an observation.
Great driving though.

Have a look at the stock OP gauge around 4:50 in the long video it bounces around quite a bit.

I will take a look at the gauge....the stock gauge doesn't work at ALL...its the standard pegged at 5 bar all the time, but the warning light DOES work

Typically on initial turn in the pressure will drop to about straight up (50psi) but the rpms are low...around 3500....then as I start to feed throttle back in the pressure recovers and climbs as it should...typically 100psi above 5000rpm

Okay I watched the part you mentioned....

The stock oil pressure is pegged...but the voltmeter is all over the place......near pegged...then under 12V.....then back to 14v which is about normal.....interesting....I do think the gauges in general are not exactly accurate....

Heres a good spot to watch for oil pressure vs rpm.....at about 4:30 I'm chasing the Z06 down the back straight and make an inside move on the civic for a less than ideal line into 14-15....I was just touching 5000rpm and it dropped all the way down to 2000rpm under braking because I was late with my downshift....when the car was turning and the rpm was so low the pressure did drop briefly below 50psi...I'd guess 35psi UNTIL the downshift...then it instantly came back to the normal 50psi+ range....typically I exit turn 15 at 75+psi
