I maintain zero illusions or delusions about value. I expect zero for my work input. I wish I was the one who bought and worked James' Euro, for instance.
That said, if it came down to buying a new camry or accord, vs, spending 20 to 30 K on a well-preserved 928, I'd have trouble not buying the 928.

The car rides and steers VERY NICELY and the A/C even works!

Ok, I am shocked that the car went for 20 grand, and I will also be shocked if it does not need ten grand worth of work to be a reliable driver.
I was wrong about what it would go for.
I doubt I will be wrong about what it needs IF it gets driven though.

Just got my first eyes on the car today and drive in the car... NOT BAD I MUST SAY! Thanks go Dr. Bob it was a great purchase! The interior is really VERY, VERY nice...I think my ColorGlo rep will be able to fix the drivers seat and then the car will have a SPECTACULAR interior. Exterior needs some work but is VERY presentable... not like this BJ car, but very nice. Probably have the front and rear bumper covers repainted and the hood and then just ENJOY THE CRAP out of it. More than a few of the horses have left the corral but we will slowly round them up.
The car rides and steers VERY NICELY and the A/C even works!

Well then congrats, who did you get to help you run up the bid?

All kidding aside, I really hope it is everything you hope it is.
Congrats man

Greg,
I agree with you...the pics of that BJ car look great! I too hope it is REALLY worth all $20k the bidder paid for it...or better yet that it is worth even more but they decide they don't like it and want to trade it to me heads up for my '85 EURO! LOL!
I too am actually surprised it went for what I said I thought it was worth...only because I am such a sucker for these cars I would pay whatever it takes for a REALLY NICE low mile one and this one *SEEMS* to fit that bill...

It is good for all of us when these cars sell for what they should go for, some of the ones sold are just sold for pennies on the dollar.

Greg you are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! Heck, most of them are as you say in fact! It is the VERY RARE 928 that goes for what we as enthusiasts *THINK* they should sell for!
Every now and then you find a BLUE82, Kermit or one of the handful of '95 GTS's we have seen of late that really bring in the bucks, but for the most part they are more like my EURO85...actually, they sell for what I bought EURO85 for, but most of them are not even CLOSE to being as nice as EURO85 at the time of the purchase!
And a SPECIAL thanks to Dr. Bob belongs RIGHT HERE, for making EURO85 happen! I am looking forward to really making it a nice car again! Interesting how no one has bothered to take that stupid yellow German sticker off the top of the ashtray lid isn't it Bob?! I will either get a new lid or take the sticker off. Probably ought to just get a new lid...

Very nice to see this one go for this kind of $$, hope the new buyer is happy. Really looks nice under the hood, all the anodized bits look perfect and the interior looks as new. It will definitely need a going over because of the sitting time. I checked the live coverage and when I turned it on they were at 653 so I missed it.

We have to recognize that there is a two-tier value model to our cars... low-mileage examples with less than 30k or 40k miles generally pull in a HUGE premium compared to "average-mileage" (<80k, in my mind) cars. I found this to be the case 3-5 years ago when I was shopping for my 928, and from the sale price of the BJ car, it's obviously still true today (and rather surprisingly, considering that we are working our way out of a recession!)
Many of us here think that this value model is logically upside-down due to the high cost of "fixing reliability into a low-miler" (a la Greg's posts in this thread, and my own experiences!), and while that view is logically sound, the undeniable fact is that this value model still holds regardless. It may not make sense, and we may not like it, but it is real and we have to accept it.
As a corollary, the price premium for low mileage favors the later models over OBs (not including the museum pieces like Kermit). Hmm... let's restate the model altogether... People will pay the most for the newest and best 928 models with the lowest mileage.
That seems to be a pretty straight-forward concept.

The ’85 got a fair amount of air time on the Barrett Jackson Speed Channel auction on Sunday morning. It was first shown early in the broadcast. The 928 was parked next to a Rolls Royce. The RR was part of the Hagerty Fantasy Bid contest that they run during the live auction, where contestants guess the final auction price to win a prize. Every time they showed the RR you also got to see the 928.
The auction of the 928 was shown 56 minutes into the broadcast. Some the commentator’s remarks:
“Bright red 928S”
“Pretty car”
“Gentlemen’s express, a little more lipstick red than let’s say Guards red, which is kind of orangy, the iconic Porsche color.”
“This was a great cruiser, better than a Mercedes SL for a performance driver.”
“Guards red, Porsche’s most popular car color”
The car looked very nice on television, very clean.

I think the car sold for the big $$$ because it had the uber rare "5 speed automatic"
Always glad to hear when a 928 sells for a premium on a highly visible medium like the BJ auction.
