Probably be a LOT more expensive and it would take them ALL DAY to try and figure it out and fit it. They are not very expensive and doubtless cheaper than the local muffler guys can do it for.

+1 buy one already made. It will likely be less expensive. Ask your shop for their estimate, and compare to the vendors on line who have them already made.....

Thanks for the replys...I agree I would rather buy one and stick it on but i want a black one and the stainless is $300 compared to black at $179. Problem is nobody has one and it will be weeks before they do. Maybe a little spoiled but after I heard one I want it NOW!!!!!

928 International, Yes I should have put one on a long time ago, and recommend one to anyone who does not have one!!!!
I'm believe the sound would be slightly different of your 87 due to your large resonators versus small resonators on the 89? I rarely see 928's in my area to compare.....

Im not going to get in the middle of anything but its called VENDOR SUPPORT.
Buy one and then know you dont have to leave the car somewhere for a day...have it not fit right...have some one welding on your car with the "Brains" still grounded.
Theres a price for things....and then there can be a cost also!
Vendor parts are proven for +5hp also.

I had mine done when I was in getting other things worked on so it wasn't an end around a vendor. I told him what I wanted and he made it in like an hour. We have been working on making a total custom exhaust with a specific sound for my 90 S4. Still not there yet. I know the sound I want and no combo of what I have heard makes it yet.

Since the 928 vendors don't supply one for my 78, I bought a chromed, dual outlet and had the local muffler shop remove the muffler and weld in a bypass. Less than 1 hour and about $50 and it was done. That was 4 or 5 years ago and it's still in great shape. Pictures are somewhere here in the archives.

A Big Advantage to the vendor-supplied bolt-on piece vs the muffler-shop welded one is that a bolt-on also means an easy unbolt if you decide to go back to the original rear muffler. The connecting flanges line up, the hanger brackets are already there and in the right place, exit nozzles spaced correctly from the bumper shell, the torch won't accidentally damage the paint.
----
Instant gratification isn't what it's cracked up to be. Seems like there are more divorces than marriages these days, for example.
Many folks have used RMB's available, worth asking. As much as the richer outside sound is, I detest the increased volume inside. Put one on, and then have more interior noise to attenuate. Seems counter-intuitive. To me anyway.
