More info.

Age/mileage would be handy.

At a minimum I'd remove the pump, clean up or replace the water pump bolts, clean the mating surface, and reinstall with a fresh gasket. That way you'll know the gasket is new, and more importantly you can put a little anti-seize paste on the bolts to prevent problems in the future.

The rational for replacing the water pump along with the timing belt is that both jobs require the same amount of labor. It's a wyit type of thing.

If you're doing your own work and don't mind doing the job twice, you can stick with the old pump.

I just did the whole WP/TB/Pkns'nr dance and used a new metal impeller Laso pump with Ed's mods shown in the thread linked earlier. I did not know the history of the old pump, and after finding some, IMHO, shoddy past work decided that I wanted the peace of mind. I just happened to have the new pump in hand when Ed announced his design so I went whole hog. If you don't know the history then I would replace the pump.

the downside is on the 32V 928's if your waterpump fails they typically lockup...and the Tbelt breaks and you end up bending valves....all $$$$$$$ repairs.....vs a little $$$ now for a pump?

If you have an OB non interference engine I'd said replace it WHEN it fails

I have had issues if you leave the pump in with a freshly tighten belt the bearing usually gives because of the increased tension on the new belt. So I always replace every other t-belt service. To me I like to do things right so I go through and replace all pulleys and pump every other t-belt service.

you could remove the bolts one a t a time and replace them if you dont want to pull the pump off the engine, if you do pull the pump drain the block first.
and get new bolts ACE has them
