Default Crank sensor bolt?

Where I can purchase a crank sensor bolt for an early 86?

Back story;
Early 86 failed to start. Previously exhibited problems not starting when warm but would always start easily when cold. Diagnostics based on information provided in this forum led me to suspect the crank sensor. Primarily based on;

1) Checked fuses , relays and grounds
2) When cranking no registered R's on the RPM gauge
3) Would not start with starting fluid (no spark)

Working my way down to the crank sensor for inspection of the connector and wiring I observed the crank sensor bolt was missing and the crank sensor had rotated ~20 degrees. Strange? I repositioned the sensor and she fires and runs as before.

I have two questions;
1) Where can I procure a new crank sensor bolt?
2) Could this be related to a warm start issue?

Regards,

1) According to PET, the part# is 999 218 005 02 and it is a pan-head screw, M6 x 16. Check with the vendors for that part#, or the hardware store for an equivalent.

2) It could well cause a problem like that. If the sensor were rotated 20-deg then it would effect the signal output, potentially making it marginal under some conditions (warm or cold, lower battery voltage while starting or higher when running.

Cheers, Jim

From Porsche they are $2 each and we have them in stock.

Any Lowes should have it in their little drawers of nut and bolts.

I think Jim had already said that

Saw that after i had posted.

But as a matter of resources, I find Lowes (NOT Home Depot) generally has a decent selection of metric bolts and pan heads. Great when you're in the middle of a project and need that one friggen bolt. Local small hardware stores also sometimes have a good selection, but that can be hit or miss. The hard one to source locally seems to be a 12x1.5 bolt. Very odd size - yet my metric tap and die set has this. Go figure.

Maybe with some of the very Senior Managers at Home Depot being 928 owners and on this list they make take note of this disrepancy 8>)

Mine had a residue of blue (loctite?) on it. It was Allen head and very close inspection seemed to indicate the threads weren't quite as nicely done as the other bolts on the car. The bolt was original.

M12x1.5 is also difficult to find at run if the mill hardware places in OZ. However can normally be found at any engineering or fastener supply places - your local equivalent of "Bolts R us"

OZ is wierd in that it went metric ages before the UK yet the local hardware places stock more imperial sized stuff than metric. In the UK which was much later going Metric the only places to get imperial anything are historic car and motorcycle specialists.

Probably not Porsche then - I was offering Porsche not Lowes or HD 8>)

I was robbed; $1.60 at Ace HW (was on the way home).
Car starts and runs now. Not sure if the warm start problem is fixed with this...fingers crossed.

Thanks for all the resources and suggestions!

I think that you just bumped, or adjusted a connection.

I have a fair amount of testing with the oscilliscope, and viewing the signal in standalone software with the car running, and the angle of the sensor made zero difference.
