+1 I always kept a spare until I got my C&R. It has an aluminum plug.

Then I stripped it and bought a spare aluminum one. By the way, it wasn't metric.

Now I have one standard allen key marked 928 rad in my toolbox.

A small hot screwdriver will sink into the broken plug. Or a cold small chisel.

If you actually look at the design of the plug you will notice the sealing surface up near the tip not back by the head. you could actually run the broken one without any issues with leaking the only thing you would have to worry about would be it backing off and falling out. In a pinch I wouldne hesitate to run a broken one, and you could put a dab of silicone that bridges between the plug and rad to ensure it didn't vibrate out. order one and when it cones in replace it. usually when the heads pop off the is usually still enough of the screwdriver slot left for easy extraction.

We always take them out to drain.
A radiator/engine that happens to has bigger issues than a broken radiator, generally speaking of course.

Operation : "Local Drain ****"

So far, a failure:
Autozone: None, "no idea if they any cross references, never seen one like that before"
Advance Auto: No luck, but they tried;
Leith Porsche Parts Counter: Part number 928-106-444-01, $6.95. None in stock, 10 in Atlanta, GA. 2 to 3 days
Leith Mercedes Parts Counter: Part 000-501-01-71, $10.50. None in stock, none at sister store 20 minutes away either.

Considered leaving it in until new one comes in, but:
1. It will bug me. Anything that is broken on this car bugs me like a mosquito bite;
2. When the new one comes it, when I put it in, lots of the fresh coolant I just put in will gush out requiring capture and reuse or replacement. Oh bother....

I think first thing in the AM, I'll call Jeannie. She's got the best shot of getting it to me overnight.....

The last one I broke had an O ring located in a marginal groove in the underside of the head. Replaced it with a Stainless bolt (IIRC M10x1.5) an M12 washer and a new O ring located in the annular space created buy the M12 washer - has worked fine for 4 years.

Check with a BMW dealer. I seem to recall seeing an identical plug in one of their radiators.

Greg, I appreciate it, but if I can't get one locally I'll call Jeannie or Roger. I don't mind paying for one, and I'm happy to support those who support us. I just wanted to get this done before the weekend...

Bill pointed out that BMW probably uses these as well, so I'll hit up the local BMW dealer tomorrow AM, then get on the phone...

VW/Audi are also a likely candidate.

Ken,
Use these part numbers and you will have lots more luck locally. Standard Mercedes part.
0005010171 or 17117571988

Booyah!

No luck at the VW dealer. Parts guy said he had never seen a drain valve for a VW, and even when I gave him what I though was a possible VW part number and application:
17117571988 : Volkswagen Jetta IV VR6 12v
It was a still a no go.
Similar story at the the Audi parts counter.

So I tried a local BMW perfomance shop:
http://www.mpoweredautomotive.com/
Mike at M Powered said he did not have one in stock, but could have it by 1PM.
At 12:55PM the phone rang and he said they had it. $4.31 and it was in my hand!
Woot!

Used the red hot screwdriver trick to extract the old one and the new one is in.

If you look at the old one, you will see a bubble in the plastic. Obviously, based on others experience, you don't need a flaw in the plastic to have the thing shear off, but it certainly doesn't help.

No so much...grrrrr..

Bled the system, took it for a short drive, topped it off, then went for a longer drive.

Running hot. Before this whole episode, would run very reliably with needle in dead center of the white marks. Now running with needle just touching the bottom of the top mark...stays there very steady, only moving <1mm either way...

Exact same coolant I was using, and I did a thorough flush. Fans are coming on as they should apparently, and cooling flaps are open ( fuse removed). Scratching head...

Can't remember if mine ran hot after TB job but it sure took some time to burp out the air in the system and I kept topping off more coolant for awhile.
