Would it be possible to just install a radio amplifier
without an antenna? I would guess the mounting location where the actual antenna connects would be enough to support the signal with the amplifier. Just a thought.

Stan,
Have you considered a sharkfin and mounting in near the hatch and running a small coax externally. What I am planning, i hate the electric antenna, PIB.

Wally i took your advice and got a wire about as long as you suggested except that since the antenna connection point was still on the outside of the windshield i just attached the wire to the pin.
This was then routed around the outside edge of the windshield and i cut some black elex tape and taped it to the windshield.
First i removed all of the trims so to get the wire as close to the edge of the window as possible, its pretty hard to tell its even on the window and the radio is now pulling in FM signals .
Thanks for your suggestion,Stan

Seconded. I used this to replace a big ugly external antenna on a car I built for a car show, and it worked just as well, if not better, even without the power leads connected.
