Default Refinishing Pipe Organ Intake

My pipe organ intake looks like someone blasted it with a fire extinguisher.

Has anyone re-finished them?

I was told they are made from magnesium. Also was told the media blasters have a hard time removing the paint.

I would like to refinish in a color complementary to the Dunkleblau or the factory colors.

Who has been down this road ? Can someone suggest a process (either DIY or shipped out?)

Thanks in advance!

PCars forever!

Its the same stuff it seems as the S4 intakes, so your best path is probably some searches for a variety of comments.

I stripped the 86 with furniture stripper and sanding. Painful and slow. Then painted with high-temp paint without undercoating. Another bad call.

Intend to media blast, outgas with heat and powder coat in silver to repair the mess.

I did mine myself with a media blaster and a lot of trial and error. As much as the original paint is flaking off what remains can be very hard to remove. When I was done with the media I used a parts washer to flush them several times with mineral spirits to make sure I removed any media that might remain inside.

I then powder coated, using the out gassing process to try and minimize any problems but the combination of my inexperience and the nature of the parts made it a less than perfect experience. I ended up restripping and recoating one of the large plenems but it was still not great.

My understanding is others have had success with professional powder coaters but make sure they know what they are doing.

I had mine powder coated by a professional. It was a bit pricey but they turned out nice. You definately want to wash, blow air, and repeat to make sure ALL media is out of the nooks and crannies. I also suggest doing the cam covers while your at it.

I had mine blasted and powdercoated...twice. The chrome powder didn't take so I had to go darker and detail them myself. Anytime something is done with the PORSCHE name on it...it will cost a bit more. Funny how that works.
