Default Why Apartment Living Sucks (Graphic Damage, Not for Weak Hearts) UPDATED: pg4

So, Ive had to be an appartment liver for the past couple years because San Diego is too expensive to have other options for us currently .

We have been unsuccessful at getting a second parking spot in the complex, and I am smart enough to let my wife park in our only spot, leaving my car on the street.
I do a fair bit of driving and I do it all in the 928 because its really super reliable for me and nothing beats it for trips! For my birthday last year my wife bought me a nice case of Craftsman tools that fit right in back of the car to always have with me in case I needed them. Then for Christmas she bought me a sub to put in the back to go with the amp and box I already had.

Well it looks like someone has been casing my car and watching for optimal windows at night to break in. We have people up late and people that work early.
My upstairs neighbor heard some racket at 4am and looked out the window and made soem noise to see a white SUV panickly high tailing it away from my car and called the cops.

Heres the damage:

Got all my radio stuff and all my tools. Im left with a few sockets and a ratchet that fell out when they were scrambling.

Because the car is not garaged I got Comprehensive insurance some time ago.
They are gonna give me like $50 for the radio stuff as they don't cover anything aftermarket, and I don't know what they will do about the glass. after my deductible I will probably get enough money to get drunk after seeing how little they give me, but Its gotta wait till Tuesday for a guy to come look at it. meanwhile I put a cheap car cover over it.....

Weapon of choice? SS Centerpunch to break the glass sorta quietly and push the glass in. Why break my quarterglass? just to rub it in I guess.

So, anyway a few questions (im gonna have to figure out how to decide the cash or them fixing it):
Can the rear hatch glass be replaced without replacing the hatch? (will insurance company know this?)
Can the rear quarterglass even be sourced other than used? (will the ins company know)
Any idea on the closest place I can source some of this? shipping will kill me. then i get to figure out how to get it done in my apartment complex parking spot... lol

Ya so any help with that stuff is appreceated. sorry for the horror in the pictures you had to see...

Thanks Mike. I will contact you after its all settled. didn't know you had spare glass?

Happened off of Linda Vista, sorta above Mission Valley. However, my wife had her window busted to steal a POS GPS unit out in front of a borders in a decent part of town!

Sorry to hear it. I could never sleep if I had to park my car out on the street like that.
I hope it's not too painfull to get sorted.

Break ins rarely make a lot of sense, people who need money for drugs work more on quantity than quality, so anything easy to steal that looks like it might sell to a fence is what they take.

Comprehensive should cover the glass, but it could get into the crazy price land easily, since most insurance companies only want new glass used.

Home (rental or condo style even) might cover the items lost or some of them.

Homeowners deductible is higher than what was stolen.

Luckily I went with a reasonably small comp deductible, but Im just not sure what they are gonna say. Hell, Id love to have them pull up rates for new stuff and cut me a huge check so I could then take care of it myself properly and pay for getting the items I need, getting it towed somewhere proper to have it done or whatever, then get it retinted because I KNOW they aren't gonna cover that
! However, I somehow feel like Im gonna get hit some default values and told good luck.

Either way I will get it sorted out and maybe luck out and find what I need close by. Im already ahead with Michael's quarter glass. Still curious on the hatch, is a replacement peice even possible to obtain or just a replacement hatch at this point?

Sorry to see this, you certainly have some work ahead of you now, one thing I always tell the wife as we live in a dodgy but somehow expensive area go figure, that you don't leave anything on display in the car. What I mean by anything is just that. An untidy car or something within that is worth taking, the reason for an untidy being an issue is that they often have spare change. I saw a show on street kids in our area and they will break you window for $2. My wife did get her car broken into even though I told her this, you see didn't listen to Greg but after Greg changed the 1/4 window she doesn't keep crap in sight anymore.

Also I know some people would love to have caught them in the act but I worked with someone who's brother did and he got killed with a screwdriver from an accomplice that was hiding across the street so unless you have a gun and maybe a second one to plant on them if you shoot them it just a loser situation for you. Hopefully the legal system will catch up with them for you!

Yea, was reading an article just yesterday in the St Louis paper about how the kids just want the loot as sort of trash talking trophies. In the story, they steel car/truck from a hotel even shot at the owner who responded to his alarm going off. Then take the truck and hit a few other parking lots for quick smash and grab (like yours). Then onto the interstate, dump the car in the city. If the car/truck doesn't get recovered during the day, they use it again the next night. Police chase - even better. Real urban heros.....geez

That really sucks, that sort of activity has been on the rise in my gated community where I live, about 3-4 cars a week. within our area. They catch the kids that do it, but they are on the street again within hours and right back at it the next night. I had to install infa-red cameras and motion sensors all around the house to record the activity at night last year.

Could be a toss up on which is more work, repaint a hatch to match your car or swap out the glass. IIRC rear glass is glued in like the front glass, but may have a bunch of clips or spacers that need to be replaced etc. Spoilers once removed can be close to rusted out too.

Once you know all of what you need, I am sure within the SoCal group most of it can be sourced, but much depends on what your insurance wants to do.

Its weird, but apparently many glass guys figure removing the glass isn't their job, so many cars have a layer of old broken glass in the bottom of the doors.
