Lightbulb Fixed my rear AC - redneck edition

Given the forthcoming trip to SITM with a wife and 5 year old, I figured I need some AC cooling, as they aren't as, well, tolerant as I am. I usually just run with the windows down and some earplugs in. Probably not an option this year.

My AC is missing a few parts at the moment. I have all the o-rings, R134a expansion valves, etc, but no time to pull everything apart and install them, get the system charged, etc... And I already had to drill out one bolt (!).

So on Saturday I invested a little time on a solution utilizing stuff I had in the garage.

I can't say much for how long it will work, or how often I'm going to have to dump new ice in it, but it sure works awesome for 5 minutes... if anything that's a success.

HAHAHAHAHA When you're done, you can use this as a one-shot intercooler setup for drag racing

Should be fun.

Here's a higher-tech refrigeration alternative for consideration:

The last time I saw this, it was titled "Redneck AC." Nice touch with the expandable foam around the opening. I learn something everyday.

Get some dry ice. SHould last longer... but better crack a window so you don't pass out. On second thought, stick with H2O based ice.

That little cooler full of ice will net you a good 10-20 mins of cooling. Think about how long a bag of ice lasts at 85º when left out, with a fan blowing hot air on it. It's gonna take buckets of ice. Good news is that stockingthe cooler with ice will occupy the attention of the 5yo, until there's so much water in the cooler that there's no more room for ice.

Bring lots of earplugs, and be prepared to wear them for the whole trip. Maybe double-up on the right-side plugs.

Hahahaha nice effort.
In my house it would be...
Her "I'm not going unless you fix the air conditioning in the car"
Me "Okay, see you in a few days"

Are the ear plugs to defend from my wife or for road noise? Hahaha.

I'm just looking forward to the trip. I don't think she expects it to function for more than an hour, but it's the effort that counts.
