Default expansion valve differences?

From what I can see in PET and our great suppliers web sites the a/c expansion valve didn't change from '87 - '95.

That being the case anyone want to give input to the attached pic. The valve on the left was removed from a '90 S4, the one on the right is new.

Actually the valve on the right is the one removed from a 90 S4!

I've seen different part numbers listed for R-12 and R-134. Don't know if there is an actual difference.

The parts being shipped currently are appropriate for R-134a. Looking at parts listings and cross-references, this valve is used on many other Euro cars including BMW well into the R-134a decades, so no worries about it working on converted cars. Maybe there is old stock of R12-curved valves, but the difference is not huge.

That thicker-bodied valve looks more like the early one, with threaded connections rather than the captive connections used in the later cars with the two retainer plates and the through-bolts.

OK.

So for an 86, will 0151.0008A work for R12 (being as I'm about to fill it)? Or is it only for R134?

The four threaded connections appear to match the original on the car and the footprint is the same.

As per usual Dr Bob is correct, The bigger valve is for threaded connections and as Malcolm has determined, for older MY's

From MY '86 on down the "larger" valve with threaded holes for the AC tubing is correct for R12 or 134.
From MY '87 on up the Thinner bodied valve that used a Allen bolt and plate to hold the tubes in place is correct for R-12 or R134.

edit: The "O" rings, dryer and valve should be replaced if you convert to 134

hope that helps,

Dave
