I just did the Oil and, and,
The book said 8 qut's or 2 GAL'S
The dip-stick said LOW,
So I filled IT UP TO FULL!!!
8.7 To full
Yes after start up and filter.
???????????????????????
Was the car parked on a level surface? Did you fill up the new oil filter before installing it? Is your dipstick going all the way into the block? Just some check this questions. If you did all of the above, get it to the full mark. You probably needed more oil because you didn't fill the oil filter. These cars do take liberal amounts of oil.
I have also wondered the same thing. My old mechanic stuck by the manual, and although the dip stick indicated the oil was 1/2 qt. low, that was 8 quarts. He insisted that I run the shark that way. My current mechanic recommends that I run the shark to the full mark on the dip stick. Again, this is after the car has stated and the filter is full. I'm also interested in other opinions. With the old mechanic I was running Castrol 20/50, now I'm running 15/50 Mobil 1(synthetic). I own a 1982 shark (US), with 110K miles.
In general, Porsche specs say that the fill quantity is approximate, and that the oil level should be maintained between the marks on the dipstick.
In most cases, there is approximately 1 1/2 quarts between the two marks.
I learned this lesson the hard way this weekend. I filled the oil to the first dip stick mark, which apparently was too much. I have so much oil on the undercarriage, mine will be found thousands of years later with no rust or corrosion. The oil was spitting out of the tail pipe all over the rear-end. The smoke was so bad, I had to wait until it got dark to run it and burn it out.
The clean up kept me busy today....

I run at the top mark all the time. No issues. In fact, if it goes just slightly below the top line, the oil level warning system kicks in if parked on slight uphill...????
Good oil and lots of it is your friend. (That's so wrong...never mind).
Holy thread resurrections batman - 2002! Never heard of this or at least my experience is to put in 8 quarts then run and fill afterwards to the second or top mark. 8.7 is in the ballpark. Level surface of course..YMMV

If you're too lazy or stupid to check the dipstick, on the later model cars, there's a sensor for the oil level, and, if you get too low, (On mine, it's like a mm below the top notch on the stick), the redlight district below the gauges comes alive and tells you that you're a moron. (oh, and that you may want to add oil whilst contemplating your choice of automobile).
