Default intermediate steering shaft play?

I have recently replaced all components of my '91 S4's steering, including rebuild rack and rack bushings, tie rods...

There is still a bit of play and I narrowed it down to the intermediate steering shaft. part# 928 347 093 01

Does that have to be replaced, can it be fixed? Is that a common problem? I have never had any issues with that on any of my prior cars...

thanks

So it's the rubber connection in the middle of the shaft?

I recall someone saying they re-riveted it. Or used bolts. It's a pain to get those U-joints off but does warrant a look-see.

Yes, that's where the play is at.

I'd pull it and take a look. These don't fail a lot. I'm sure there are plenty of used ones available. Make sure it's not a U-joint.
