Air Bag Steering wheel fit on a 87 S4
I prefer the look and feel of the air bag steering wheel. Will a airbag steering wheel from a 87 944 Turbo fit my 928 S4? Obviously there will be no air bag which I don't want.

The airbag wheel is not a direct fit on a non-airbag car, but it can be done very easily. You just have to use the hub from the non-airbag steering wheel and install it to the airbag wheel by tapping the hub and installing bolts through the airbag wheel. There was a nice "how-to" with pics a long time ago. A rennlister by the name of aircooler came up with it. His site is no longer there and he has since gotten rid of his 928. Maybe PM him, he might still have the writeup. It is not a big deal and does not require changing the steering column. Not sure if the 928 airbag wheel and 944 turbo airbag wheel are the same or not.

So, Mike you are saying the hub on the airbag wheel is removable and can be replaced with a non-airbag hub. OK, that solves the principle problem in doing this swap, which is the shafts have different splined ends, 16mm for airbag and 18mm for non-airbag. I see references to aircooler's site in earlier posts about this.

Searching, I found a thread Aircoooler started about swapping on a 968 airbag wheel.

Can't find any mention of 928 airbag swap.

Bill,
I might have saved off a copy of this a long time ago. I will have to check one of my laptops at home. If so, I will post. IIRC, there was not any machining required, only tapping the existing holes in the non-airbag hub.

Bill,
I checked my other laptop for a copy of this procedure, but came up empty. I think aircooler still frequents Rennlist, just not the 928 section. If someone wants to PM him, I am sure he still has the procedure.
From what I remember, you remove the hubs from both steering wheels. You have to tap some of the existing holes in the non-airbag hub. These line up with holes in the airbag wheel that you have to drill out to a larger size or you have to drill new holes (that is the part I am not sure about). After that, you mount the hub to the column using the large nut same as stock. Then mount the airbag wheel to the hub using new bolts that thread into the hub.
Hope that makes sense. I did something similar, but used a more modern airbag wheel. Instead of being more plug and play, I had to cut out material and make an extra mounting bracket to go between the wheel and the non-airbag hub. Using the 928 airbag wheel would have been much easier.
