Default little help that will go a long way....

towards getting these transmission lines off.

The linkage at the transmission has the quick disconnect type socket, that I'm used to just popping off with a screw driver, but this one seems to maybe require a bit more finesse. It doesn't want to just pop off. There is a wire that penetrates the base of the socket and wraps around it. Is this wire what is preventing the socket from popping off? Is the wire to be completely removed? If so, it looks like it may be tough to re-insert. Advise?

Yup, take that clip off, it will rotate after you pop it off the shaft, then pull it out. Then the ball/cup will come off.

Yup, good point!

I've seen several 928s with the safety wire missing. My '85 had one missing from the throttle linkage.
